Turner named Teacher of the Year
All four Lamar
County schools have
introduced Teachers of
the Year for 2023 with
praise and gratitude for
their work in the school
system.
The four chosen
were primary school,
Courtney Goddard;
Elementary, Amber
Grubbs; Middle School,
Grant Turner; and High
School, Julie Kilby.
Turner was chosen
from the four as system-
wide Teacher of the
Year.
Goddard has a wide
range of experience
working with students,
having come through
Lamar Schools and
started with the sys
tem as a parapro for
two years and now has
taught for 11 years. She
relates well to all her
students, displaying her
love for learning and ex
citing the students with
a “camp-out” reading
experience under a tent
in the classroom. “They
used their flashlights to
read,” principal Jeremy
Hawkins said. She also
leads the “Curious
Minds Science Club” for
the students.
Amber Grubbs
serves as E1P (Early
Intervention Program)
teacher and the MTSS
(Multi-Tiered System
of Supports) building
coordinator. While she
works hard and pushes
others to do their best,
she does not seek the
spotlight. Principal Dr.
P. Wilson noted that
of all the adjectives
describing Grubbs,
“humble” and “kind”
were most used by her
teacher colleagues.
A true historian,
Grant Turner is a gradu
ate of Lamar schools
who came back to share
his knowledge with
home town students.
Dr. Stephen Boyd,
LCMS principal, shares
Turner’s passion for his
tory; both record and
research local historical
markers throughout the

county. When Dr. Boyd
asked students to talk
about Turner, several
said one of the things
they enjoy about being
in Turner’s class is that
