Humility.
The great majority of men are
still a long way off from under
standing or appreciating the qual
ities which constitute a really
strong character. From the pop
ular point of view, a strong char
acter is made up more largely of
the aggressive order than of the
higher traits of power. Asa mat
ter of fact, the strongest men have
been those who have been most
thoroughly self-restrained, and
have carried themselves among
their fellows in the quietest possi
ble way, Mr. Kipling once said
that all the great fighters he had
known were men of almost preter
natural stillness of manner; one
who did not know would have been
grossly imposed upon by their ap
parent docility. The poet Whit
tier was a fine example of a fiery
spirit thoroughly kept in hand ; a
man of most energetic and intense
nature, resolutely self-contained.
No man capable of greater courage;
none took the risk of sacrifice of
growing reputation and future use
fulness with keener appreciation
of the risks he was assuming than
the young Quaker poet; but among
all the men of li is time he was one
of the most thoroughly humble. In
a quaint little copy of “The Imi
tation of Christ” which was found
among his books, well worn and
well thumbed, this passage is
marked: “Esteem not thyself bet
ter than others, lest perhaps thou
be accounted worse in the sight of
God, who knows what is in man.”
The surprise, almost painful in its
intensity, which Whittier showed
when popularity came to him and
very considerably pecuniary re
turns followed the publication of
his books, was unaffectedly
genuine. Ardent, impetuous, au
dacious, and even fiery, he was
yet possessed of a truly humble
spirit. There was no touch of
mock modesty in him, nothing of
that sham humility which is a
cheap imitation of the real qual
ity; but there was in him so deep
a recognition of the greatness of
life and the human responsibility
so high a regard for the art which
he served, that success, instead of
elating the poet, gave his con
science keener edge, and made him
the more exacting in his demands
upon himself. Humility is the
quality of a fine nature; but, like
all qualities, it is capable of de
velopment, and it is best develop
ed by fixing one’s mind on the
spiritual significance of one’s
work; for whim a man understands
how fathomlessly deep are the
spiritual possibilities of every
thing that he does with his hands
or with his mind, lit l is in the best,
possible way to learn the differ
ence between that which he does
and that which ought to be done;
between his own faltering effort
and the perfect achievement. To
look into the deeps of one’s work
is to rid one’s self of that con
sciousness ol'self which is the bane
of so many workers of talent and
energy, and to set one’s self reso
lutely to the task, not of advanc
ing one’s reputation, but of stead
ily deepening one’s insight and
steadily building up one’s power.

General Presentments. ~
' c
We the grand jurors chosen ans
sworn for the April term of the suj
perior court of Pike county, submit
the following presentments. We
have through the various commit
tees carefully examined all the
records of the county, and after
careful and thorough examination
of the books of the County School
Commissioner, we find them neat
ly and judiciously kept with proper
vouchers for all funds paid out
and congratulate the county in
having, so proficient an officer and
note especially his promptness in
paying out the money, in all cases,
beginning the next day paying off
tlm teachers. Also we find the re
cords of the clerk of the superior;
court kept in a manner which
reflects great credit on our efficient j
clerk, J. B. Matthews, being prop
erly endorsed, and note specially
that not a single spot on any record
except the beautiful hand-writing. j
Also the records of the ordinary;
and find them properly indexed
and properly kept. The books of
thesheriff, we fii and all entries prop
erly made and that he has collect
ed in fines, etc., and turned over
to the county treasurer the sum of
seven hundred and forty nine dol
lars and fifty cents.
The books of the tax receiver
we find neatly and properly kept.
Also that of the tax collector per
fectly kept and commend our ef
ficient officer for his diligence. We
find that the following amounts
on special taxes viz ; on the manu
facture of spirituous liquors SI4OO,
on dispensary $200.00, on pistols
and cartridges $75.00, on cigarettes
$20.00, photographs $20,00. shows
SIO.OO, bicycles SIO.OO amounting
to $1,734.00.
We commend our treasurer on
his method and find the books of
the county treasurer properly kept
and vouches fur all money paid
out, amounts received from all
sources $18,900,53 amounts paid
$11,381,09, casli on hand to balance
$2,585.44.
We find the lands of the poor
farm badly washed and the terraces
sadly neglected in that they have
not been cleaned off or thrown up
and no notice taken of the breaks.
We find eleven paupers who are
well cared for and well satisfied,
on account of condition of roof of
the dwelling house, we recommend
that it be attended to at once.
We find from examination of
pension roll that there are (83)
indigent, (45) invalid and (46)
widows of soldiers who draw pen
sions.
The jail and court house we
have examined as a body, and
report the jail neatly kept, having
more the appearance of a parlor
than a prison, and recommend a
new door on the east side of the
dining room. Also, that some
repairs be made on court house,
stopping leaks in roof, and that
more care he given to the building
and that enclosure be kept around
the grounds to prevent any tres
passing on the same, and that
sewerage be placed in north west
corner of jail to convey water
from the 2nd story. We approve
the bill of Dr. Aycock attending
small-pox cases in the family of
Dalton Glass and recommend he
be paid the sum of thirty dollars,
and that I). P. Blake be paid five
dollars for medicines furnished
and services rendered in same
family, and urge the county com
missioners to be more dilligent in
looking after all cases of small
pox, and take necessary step of pre
caution to keep it from spreading,
and further recommend that the
county commissioners resume the
payment of S!G annually to the
extreme needy paupers of the
county not on farm, and that the
county commissioners be paid .$2,
for extra services rendered.
We note with pleasure a marked
improvement in conditions of all
the public roads in the county.
We find them well worked and
