THE TWENTIETH CENTURY COUNTRY WEEKLY.
BARNESVILLE, GA., THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 1903.
A SETTLEMENT
WAS EFFECTED,
CASES AGAINST H VGI’IjEY ANl>
HOOEItS HAVE BEEN DIS
MISSED.
A settlement was effected Tues
day afternoon in the cases of Col.
J. .T. Rogers and Mr. G. E. Hugu
lev, growing out. of the failure
of the New South Savings Bank.
In accordance with a proposition
made by parties at interest at
October term of Pike Superior
court, Col. Rogers and Mr. ITugu
ley paid over to the receiver the
sum of S6OOO and each and every
case against them was no lpross
ed. the order being signed by
Judge Reagan of the Flint cir
cuit.
It will he remembered that this
settlement came up some months
ago, and when the prosecuting
attorneys put in their claim for
ten per cent of the S6OOO, they
were promptly turned down.
Judge Reagan stated that the en
tire amount, less the court costs,
should go to the depositors and
creditors of the bank. He persist
ently refused to yield his views
and was endorsed hv the people
interested and by the public.
Mr. T. W. Cochran, the receiver
of the bank, handles the money
without any commission.
This settlement is received with
pleasure by the public, especially
by the friends of Col. Rogers and
Mr. Huguley.
Had Narrow Escape.
Mr. Cliff Flewellen was caught
!in the elevator at the factory of
I Messrs. J. G. Smith & Sons Sat
urday morning last and was right
right badly hurt, in fact, he nar
rowly escaped death.
The elevator was going down
and Mr. Flewellen stuck his head
over in the shaft looking down
and was caught. His neck and
head was considerably bruised
and skinned up. He was sent
home and Dr. E. C. Ripley gave
him such medical aid as was
necessary. It is remarkable that
the young man was not killed. He
has been getting along well ana
will probably be at work in a few
days.

Interest Not Part of Bouded Debt
The Supreme court of Georgia
handed down its decision a few
days ago on the bond question
and it was held that the interest
was not a part of the bonded
debt, this view being held by
every member ,ot the court.
Quite a number of the cities
and towns of the state were vitally
nterested in the decision, among
them being Barnesville on account
of the recent bond issue of SIO,OOO
It is another case in which the
interests of the people win out.

“Afraid of Banks,”
A phrase we heard someone recently use. Well, are
you afraid to ride on the cars, just because there
have been wrecks on the rail-road ?
Are you afraid to buy something to eat, just
because someone lias occasionally been cheated in
groceries ? ?
Are you afraid to bathe, just because a man was
once drowned in a bath tub ? ? ?
Are you afraid to breathe, just because there are
a few poisonous microbes in the air? ? ? ?
We trust you will see the point, if not, call to see
us and we will point it out.
