being u live up-to-date paper, we
wish to contribute something from
our town, and section.
Until very recently we had a
live town, with two business
houses, Mr. I. C. Collier a live
merchant and doing a good busi
ness and Mr. G. H. Warthen, a
young man of sterling integrity,
was doing a fine business until he
was burned out. He had a fine
stock of goods; bad built a hew
and commodious store house,
carrying about a five thousand
dollar stock, partly covered by
insurance. On the night of the
oth of march, the entire build
ing and contents were burned to
the ground. This sad calmaity
lias cast u gloom over our commu
nity.
\Ve had not fully recovered
from the shock of the ‘incendiary’s
torch,’ when this second applicat

proceedings is a question of
serious moment. 1 may venture
a suggestion later.
The literary sell iol at this place

by Miss Simmons, of Zebulon.
The services of the Baptist
church for last Saturday and Sun

owing to the bad weather.

I wonder which will lie present
ed at the Grand jury this term at
the court. “The road commis
sioners” or the “bad weather.”
The best way to maintain good
roads is a problem hard to solve.
The more the roads have been
work 3d up-to-date, the worse they
are. Now the question arises;
“Have the commissioners and
Overseers done their duty?”
“Can’t, doing too much of a thing
result in as much harm as not. do
ing enough?” The mayor, chief
of police, both acted as overseer
on the streets in our town. And I
think it will take a full twelve
months for them, (the streets) to
recover from the fearful distur
bance.
How about court? can the far
mers attend court for ten days;
then prepare their land and plant
in time to make a crop? I believe
the “Lord” has something to do
with tin 1 weather, but 1 think the
“devil” has a great deal to do with
the courts.

Miss Weiser, the artist
in our millinery depart

reins in the Eastern Mar
kets—Nothing was sjjired
to make our stock* of
Easter fixings the equal
of any in the cities of
Georgia.
In looking over some
of the artistic creations of
the clever artists. We
are tempted to assert that
she has over-shadowed
the so called leaders of
Millinery in this State.
There is somewhat of a>
“Knack,” in knowing
how to get up an Easter
bonnet that has the proper
style and appearance with
out putting so much cost
to it. We don’t mean to
say make a cheap hat —
when we say a hat with
out “So Much Cost” —
There’s a difference. The
difference is in the way
its put on the hat-There’s
where the milliners talent
is brought out. Miss
Weiser’s showing we are
satisfied will meet your
approval. The proof is
in the hat—come see for
yourself.

recognized as a dry town yet it

The important feature about our
towm is our literary school. Our
school has been taught by Miss
Eunice Jones as principal for about
three years.
We have had the banner coun
try school in the county. But
very recently there arose a dis
turbance that had been brewing
for several months. We have in
connection with our literary de
partment, a music department,
that is taught by Miss Annie
Howard. A religious sect of no
denominational name having
sprung up in our community, ob
jected to music being taught, and
made an effort to break up our
school. But they have signally
failed. I write this to correct a
false rumor that has gone abroad.
Our school is still doing well. We
claim to have as good teachers as
there is in the state. She is above
reproach, religiously and intellect
ually, and anything circulated to
! the. contrary is false. Our music
teacher is a young lady fully com
petent to her task. And since she
has been among us, she has fully
maintained the reputation she has
at home, “that of a beautiful
Christian character.”
The desire upon the part of these
religionists to break up our school
and demoralize our community,
“found its origiu in the basest
of ignorance,” and is being fed by
the vile “prejudice.” Our board
of trustees is composed of the
representative men of our section,
and the growth of our school for
the past few years proves their
efficiency. I refer the public to
our county school commissioner,
Frof. 11. 1). Adams. He knows the
facts in the case, and has always
been untiring in his efforts to
help us. The better class of our
people are all religious but are not
“fanatics.”
