| terest to thousands of jieople who have
long desired a decision on some of the
points that will be developed. It seems
that a young man, a member of one of
jibe Chicago Clubs, a gentleman of
wealth androfinement, is to be sued bv
1 a young woman for 0a0,(X)0 damaged
lor injuries tliat his daughter received
while in his society. The young peo
ple had been keeping company for some
years, and the carriage of the young
man was often seen in front of the
Michigan avenue residence of the ladv.
Isast Iteecemiterheceasetl visiting her,
and siftre that thne sne !f;vslieen an in
i ' alid, and has Ijeen treated for a spinal
ditMculty and the father will go into
tin* I rfurts, it saitl against Ins daught
er s wish, to have the matter of respon
sibility settled. It seems that the young
man i* Itovvlegged, so mueJU str tliat it
has been considered dangerous
\ ;i, iy one tosit in his lap, for fear
the\ would fall through on the floor
and break some liones. It is said that
the young man knows his failing, and
that ae usually holt's any p rson vtflb
may be in his lap with his arms, so tliat
there is no danger of falling through
• nit that in this case he forgot the dan -
g< r. and let the gii l slip. The father
claims that the young man, knowing
how fearfully and wonderfully he is
made, should have adopted precautions
and in his complaint he will swear that
on Several occasions lie has warned the
young mail that he should place aboard
across his lap, or some day liis paren
thesis legs would let .someliody*throiigh.
In his answer to the complaint the
young man will say that his legs are
just as nature made them, and that any
Gully who sits in his lap takes his chan
ces. lie adds that if the girl had used
all the precaution tliat one in so danger
ous a position should use, and thrown
her arms around his neck us others
have done, there need have been no dan
ger; aud while he sympathizes deeply
with her and her family, owing to the
alleged injury, he can not consider him
self responsible. Of course there are
two sides to every question, and both
sides will have sympathizers.
While we do not wish to take sides
on the question, there are some things
connected with it that it seems a duty
of the pious pr ss to agitate- The conn
try is full of bow-legged young men go
mg about sc* king whom they may hold
n their laps, and the wowder is that
iiidic such accidents do not occur. There
•hould be some law to protect girls
fro u bow-legged men. We throw s rt fe
guards around our trapeze pcrformeis
by compelling the managers to plan
nets under t hem, and why should we
not provide by law that the bow-legged
young man should string a hammock
tinder Iris boomerang lens to catch those
wlAmay loose their spring ballanee,
ttun a somersault, and fall in the win
ter of theii discontent. It would not
be nleasaut'"oathe bow-legged young
imli to be compelled to carry a ham

* itrvrould be safer for the girl. We have
known a careful young man, who was
bow legged, to lay a press-board, or it
sewing-machine leaf across his lap be
fore lie w ould let a girl sit down among
him; but wheiT 1 one young man is thus
careful there are hundreds who never
think of the other hearts that are liable
to ache.
Inventors have studied in vain on a
device for protecting people from the
dangers of bow-legs, and doctors who
straighten cross-eyes have tried to
straighen bow-legs, but nothing seems
to avail. Hundreds of girls and women
as they read this will shudder at t lie
narrow’escapes they have had from
tailing through man-traps, and they
will w ith us in the hope that the
law \B protect them. Oh, of course,
thermae some who would never fall
through the hgs were bowed
twice as much as they are,but many are
soeareless they are never safe.—Burl

People of small means or regular in
come who are tempted to specumte by
the exceptional instances ol good lueifc
that come to their ears ignore the oth
er side of the gambling practice. The
person who increases to the sum of
•51,200 within a few day by buying or
selling em u for future delivery, or more
properly, by heltiifc on the future price
of corn, d< es so at the expense of oth
ers who bet the other way. The in-
crease of a gambling fund is represent
ed always by losing which others have
made. To enable one boot-black to
win.#l.2oo from#s: it is necessary that
a hundred others should lose 85,' twen
t_v others 810, ten others 820, and half a
dozen others 800 each. Every man.
woman or child who seeks to make
some such gain as tho exceptional boot
black, takes the chance to lose among
the hundreds whose investments or
bets are swallowed up by the fewer
winnings. M is evident‘that the clian
e.’s are fearfully against the amateur
gambler, who is, moreover, much more
injured by losing the small surplus he
h is worktsl for than he would h<* bene
(itfed by winning tlie large stakes he
desires, but to lose it in the end. Tlie
only people eoneerued in these gaml.iM
ling transactions wh< could
lair chance of making money
time are those who act as agents for the
exchange of money from one pocket to
another and take a emnmMmion mi all
bets, and from both \\ inncis amf® los
ers. Those who are tempted, likewise
ignore the ulterior influences that are
to attend gambling transactions of this
kind-—the temptations that follow a
winning, the desperate efforts madeto
gt t even on a losing the personal priva
tions and often family necessities which
accompany gambling and the dissipa
lion of success, or the crime of smbez
•/.lenient so frequently incident to fail
uve. People who work for their mon
ey, whether they save it or spend it,
may escape much mental agony by av
oiding the grain gambling as relig
iously as they would the faro or ken o
bank.
FIRST FROST IN THE NOTH
WEST.
The first killing frosts of ft he seasoif
have fallen in the Northwest, but they
are not ahead of time and are proba
bly too late to seriously injure the crop
Last September frosts fell in Minneso
ta on the loth and 22d. but they were
not severe. In September, lsso'howev
er they oceured in portions of the
northwest as early as the 15th, and
from the 22d to the 30th were sharply
felt, while as early as the 7th the Sig
nal Service reported the formation of
ice at Saint Vincent, Minn. T 1 e
frost area of tliat month also extend
ed, from the 10th to the 24th, over the
lake region and the interior of Ntw
England and the Middle States# In the
fall of 1870 destructive frosts set in
still earlier in September and over a
large part of the country, begin nil g
in the Upper Mississippi Valley aim
extreme Northwest, according to the
Signal Service reports, by the 14th, and
in the lake region on the 11th of the
month, when thev wuv also injure us
to vegetation in New York and Pciiih; |
vaniu. In September, 1808 sharp frosts
fell in Dakota. Minnesota and lowa on
the 10th, and the year previous a gen
eral frost spread from the 17tli to the 23d
of September over the entire countrv
north of the thirty-seventh parallel. If
we are to take the first appearance of
severe frost as the date of autumn’s re and 1
opening the season was also earlier in !
1875 and 1870 than it is this year. The >
average date at which the frost-hearing
