soon as it had been tested and

many imitatioi# sprang up and began
to steal the notices in which the press

The press of the country for the past
week have l*een more or less engaged in
discussing the latest move of the great
gambler, J. Gould. He lias made a move
that startles the country, because of its
probable results. The New York Her
ald a few days since published more or
less of the facts. To put the matter in
the briefest form Gould is said to have
purchased the control of the Associated
Press and intends hereafter to let the
great dailies of the metroplis publish on
ly such news as will benefit his specula
tions. There are seven daily papers in
A e\\ A ork that manage the associated
dispatches, controlled three of
them and a few days since the Herald
stated that lie had captured the Sun
which made the fourth and thereby ob
ta’ned the controling influence.
Ihe A\ esteru U nion Telegraph com
pany is the agency paid tocarrry the dis
patches of the Associated Press. Some
time si nee,Gould purchased the Tribune
and World and since then lias added to
the list the Evening Express. The
Herald, Times, Sun and journal of Com
merce were the four left. According to
the Herald the Sun has thrown the
weight of its influence into Goulds
hands, joined him in August and thus
put the control of the Associated Press,
in to Gould's hands.
Up to the present time the collection
of news for the association has been su
perintended by au executive committee,
composed of the proprietors of three
leading New York journals. Mr. Gould
wth the concurrent and assistant vote
New York Sun has| discharged
that executive committeoama given no
tice that the enfployes monopba
piously known as the Western TeIJP
will hereafter collect
tiie neVo furnish the Associat
ed Press. I lasmucJpis Mr. Gould is
the A\ esteri l nion Telegraph Company
and also at present tire Associated Press
the public is only such
despatches as Mr. Gould chooses to have
published.
The importance of this nuve cannot
be estimated. To curb the press of a
lree people is simply to become masters
of such peopte.

There is a close analogy between the
political barrel and other barrels. People
who once get a habit of resorting to the
barrel think “they ‘must have| it any
way.’’ They soon come to vegartfti daily
pull at the faucet as a * legitimate ‘ex
pense of the campaign.’’ They go oft
ener and oftener, drink deeper and deep
er, and ultimately find that the barrens
all there is to them. It is so with par
ties. Three times the money is spent
by the republican party to-day, we ven
ture to say, that there was 15 years ago,
and the more is spent, the more has got
to be spent, until candidates of the plu
tocracy are put up to enable the party to
win. Meantime the voter is degraded,
public sentiment drugged, and the youth

FOUND DEAD.
Ihe following account we clip from
the press dispatches from Americas
Georgia:
A horrible discovery was made here
this morning. The dead body of a maM
named Isaac Stegermau, aged about/
forty-five years, a drummer for Berr
heim, Raxanger & Cos., whisky dealers
of Cincinnati, was found in a water
closet just across the street from the
commercial house. A negro man pass
ing the place had his attention attrac- 1
ted by the tei’Nble odor arising from one !
oi the closets, and called the attention I
of others to the matter. The door was
locked from the inside, and upon being
burst open the body of the unfortunate I
man was found jammed, head foremost,
against the door. The deceased had
evidently been dead for several days, j
and the body presented a horrible and !
sickening appearance. Mr. Stegerman J
was last- seen alive on Friday mori£ig 1
just after breakfast, when lie was, in
lively and cheerful spirits, lie did not
come back to the hotel t ifinner, and
the landlord, believing that he had g#e
out to some of the country townsn
business, paid but little attention toTiis
prolonged absence. As no signs of vio
lence were discoverable upon the body
it is presumed that he died from natu
ral causes. Deceased is brother of S.
Stegerman, of Thomasville.
