ns up in tin* Fourth Con^ress
strict of Alabama. D. Y. Ilowze.
Assistant Postmaster at Marion, in that
received notice Beptemt)er 20
iiom the chairman and treasurer of the
district committee asking for a contri
bution of ten dollars toward the election
tf Judge Craig, the Republican candif
ditlate. As Howze was a Democrat he
simply failed to take any notice of the
circular. One month later lie received
another notice, with the Jay Ilubbell
attachment, expressing surprise and
regret that lie had so far failed to re
ipond, and coolly informing, him that
ffrery'Fedenfl officer in the district ex
cept himself had come down with his
contribution like a little man. Mr.
i lowze ofttifcluitod to reply and his letter
was published. lie states that he was
employed by tlie Postmaster to perfonn
duties o£<, Assistant solely on ac
count of his fitness lor the position and
with the full knowledge that lie was a
Democrat. Jqje hadn’t been asked by
Ids employer to sell Ins political prin
ciples for the position and he wouldn’t
do it if be had. And he didn’t propose
to respond with any money to help elect
a man of the opposition" party, and if
discharged for that lie was ready to look
jur other business. If there were more
men like Mr. Ilowzein public life, who
koid their positions simply on the
strength of their titness for the place
scorn to hold it on any
other tenure, it wohld be much better
for the service.
In Louisville aWißus has been taken
as to the habits of certain boys in stud
ying the Westminister Shelter Cate
chism. It is found in one neighborhood
that “out of twenty boys none use to
bacco, none use liquor, none use pro
fane language and twenty have learned
Catechism.’’ Another correspondent
ioports: “Out of thirty boys twenty
six use tobacco, twenty-seven use liquor,
twenty-eight use profane language, on
ly one little girl has learned the Cate
chism.” There is evidently a great
difference in the religious training of
these young Kentuckians. It is to be
hoped that those of them who use to
bacco do not get hold of as mean cigar
ettes as some of the boys in this
smoke.
