The best citizens almost en rase
up with indignation last week at the ed
itorial of the Augusta Chronicle which
without any cause but to serve the
Brown-Col quilt dynasty attacked the
Hon. J. C. C. Black because he dared to
suggest a reform in the methods of
the “bosses.” We published last week
what Mr. Black said. There was no
cause for such an attack, and the best
citizens, white and black, republicans
and democrats met aud passed resolu
tions denouncing the editorial attack on
Mr. Black. The resolutions character
ize the editorial as an unprovoked at
tack, its argument unscua I, its asser
tion of Mr. Black’s want of strength un
true, and its tone ill-tempered and of
fensive.
The boss organ in Atlanta denounces
the people of Augusta for having the
courage and the manhoood to stand up
their opinions en masse against the
opinions of Pat Walsh who has been
toadying to Colquitt and Brown, When
the people rise up in a body and de
nounce an editorial it must be flagrant
ly wrong.
The people of Chatham county are
moving in the direction of having a bil
passed by the Legislature changing the
time of holding the county election at
the same time.
'1 he county elections taking place in
1883 necessitates the paying of the tax
es of 1882. while the Collector is still
collecting. The constitution requires
all taxes except for the year of the elec
tion, but under this bill for all elections
taking place during the same year the
requirements will be more equitable .
The bill is designed to do away with all
doubt as to the constitutionality of reg
istration. The caption of the bill is as
follows:
An act entitled an aet to change the
time of holding the election for coun
ty officers in Chatham county; to mo
vide for the appointment of mS
gers, and for the management of elec
tions hereafter to be held in Chatham
county for a Senator and Representa
tives in the Legislature of the State
and for State and county officers; to
prescribe the qualifications of voters
at said elections; to better preserve
good order at and around the polls;
to provide penalties for all violations
of this act, and for other purines.
The bill is a good one
result in much good if it should be
made applicable to the whol^tate.
