At Lancaster, ilst week, a mystor
ious explosion tolk place. The large
cotton seed bin of Mr. Xanee, a resi
dent of that place, which contained
some three thousand bushels of cotton
seed, exploded with terrilic force scat
tering the seed to the four winds of the
e;irth, tearing down the bin and a part
of the stable adjoining. The report
was heard for some two miles distant.
It is the supposition that a large amount
of gas had generated in the seed.

It has often occured to our miud to
enquire why so few ladies raise poultry
with a view to profiting by the produc

As we have temporary charge of the
editorial department of r £b e Household
we venture to present some thoughts
on this subject. We hope the sisters will
reeeive them as they are intended.
In the outset, we are convinced that
there is no kind of domesticated ani

more easily and agreeably, and with
greater profit than common poultry.
Sheep some times yield 20, 40 and even
70 per cent, but it is either a very poor
hen, or a poorly managed hen, that
