Christmas in Now Orleans was

yotlng America is noted, jtnd
while there was no snow, tiie s.*ies
were overcast, the air damp aud
chilly, and Itlazing fires and heavy
ovi'rcoats wore very onjoyabte. T'i.e
<!:ty was largely celcdtrated by an
adult class with “glass horns," for
which the chilly atmosphere created
an unusual demand, though there
vots little or no evidence of intem
perance on the streets nor in the
public resorts.
At the Exposition it was child
ren's day, who were admitted at
hail’price, and for whose delecta
tion a large Christmas tree was pre
pared, stocked with a vast variety
of gifts. In the evening there was
ii'.v music, and the buildings were
briiliantly illuminated by electrici
ty, arid tt great throng of delighted
pc. ipic, including the little people,
T'.tt in the novel sights for tiie time. I
The main building devoted to pri
me and general exhibits, Covers a
' pace of thirty-three acres, and elic
ited many exclamations of wonder
from the numerous visitors. All
the buildings are on a settle of like
magnitude, the whole including tt
hont seventy-five acres under roof.
While many hundreds of Exhi
bits are already up, possibly thous
ands, it may surprise the reader,
as it did your correspondent, to
learn that many hundreds are yet
incomplete, and very many tire yet
to arrive; and this is not true’of
private hut also of Govcnncnt and
State Exhibits, and fully a month
must elapse before the vast enter
prise will he incomplete running
order, so that the intending visitor
will 1. )ose nothing by postponing
j 3is coming for thirty days, but will
jhe the gainer by doing so. In the
I meantime the grumbling and fric
tion inevitable at the inauguration
of all great events, prevails in this
ease. It Would be a thankless, and
perhaps n useless task, to attempt
10 locate theenuse or causes of so
much conflict, friction and confu
sion. Much of it doubtless results
from delay in forwarding exhibits;
some from lack of rapid and plen
tiful transportation,and some from
unavoidable mistakes in the man
agement. But in ti short time,, your
correspondent believes that* all
grounds of complaint will have dis
appeared, and the great Exposition
will present a scene of peaceful and
multiform interest never before wit
nessed in the world’s history, and
that .its results will surpass the
wildest dreams o - its projectors.
A number of spites have their
exhibits in an incomplete condition,
some .are nearly ready, but your
readers must await succeeding let
ters for notice of them, as it would
do them injustice to apply either de
scriptkm or criticism to them at
this early stage, and to which your
correspondent intends to do full
j justice. The (fovernment displays,
when finished, will he the most com
plete and the most interesting ever
attempted, and will he in itself a
great study, both for the student and
teacher and for the ordinary ob
server. Every department of the
public service, the navy and army,
the Interior. Patent, State Educa
tional, all will hero be portrayed,
together with a most wonderful .ar
ray of ancient, prehistoric and
historicobjects of the greatest in
terest to all. To all of which such
attention will he given its to, leave
little moro to be asked for In* 1 your
readers.
It may !>c well to remind such of
your readers as intend to visit the]
Exposition,'-’that on arrival here
they will find pl4ntv of lodging I
room from 25 cents to one dollar I
per ile v, and as for hoarding it can
lie hud at any price “under the
sun,” and in every variety, from a
ham sandwich to an elaborate
and luxurious banquet. The Ex
position office in the city, I (it)
Gravier street, has a department
entirely, occupied in directing
strangers’where to find accommod
ations, and as the information is
free and reliable, it is well to call
there. Have your mail directed

The Legist:.tu r-
In aecordiUiCri with the resolutioii
to adjourn on the 20th, the Legisla
ture adjourned to July next. 1 hurs
day and Friday, were Largely con
sumed by the House in discussing
the general liquor bill. The liquor
element in the House by filibuster
ing were able to stave oh a vote, and
the bill was made the special order
for the first Monday tit the July ses
sion. There were however several
test votes taken which showed that
the temperance element in the
house, was more titan two to one.
Thursday the House offered a
gross indignity to Bike county,
one that has not been put on any
county heretofore. Hon. Jon. E.
Gardner offered a resolution tender
ina Mr. Thus. J. Williamson a seat
on the lioor, and the 1 louse refused
to grant the request by voting down
the resolution. I’ike will long ic
member this snub offered her Rep
resentative. Outside the appropria
tion bills very little was done save
the passages of localjbills.
Writeen befer c the holidays but
was crowded out.
How He Got Position.
“I applied for a position in a
banking house in Wall street six
nfonths ago, and although I proved
my competency, they would not
take me. 1 had been down on my
luck and looked old and shabby.
An idea struck me, I got up anew
growth of hair with Parker’s Hair
Balsam, raised a decent suit of
clothes, applied again, and they
took me in a minute.” So writes a
clerk with s2,Of A salary. The moral
is plain. Parker’s Hair Balsam gives
a person anew face.
Notwithstanding the position of
Mr. Blaine, that the Liquor Ques-‘
tion was not a national one, during
his canvass, for the presidency, his
party comes forward and virtually
brings it into our national polities.
Before adjourning for the Holidays
the Republican Senate passed tiie
Blair Liquor bill which provides for
the appointment of all “Alcoholic
Liquor Commission,” to consider
the expediency of a general law. re
stricting and regulating the trade,
or prohibiting it, as the ease may
he. It is not impossible that
I the matter may result in the recom
mendation of a prohibotory ainend
m-nt to the Constitution of the
] United States.
