HOME-CONSUMED-
Editor Gazette: —l am gratified to
know that my article on Merchant
Mill for Barnesville is generally ap
proved. Now let citizens of Barnes
ville and surrounding country put
their shoulders to the wheels of pro
gress and turn a big enough wheel to
grind every bushel of corn and wheat
that can be raised within twenty miles
!ot our progressive city. The sooner
this is done the better for town and
country. Our farmers can raise
enough corn and wheat to bread ev
ery woman, man and child and feed
every hog and horse and horned cat
tie that breathes within our reach.
Let everything that man or beast con
sumes in our little community be
home-raised, and home-ground if need
be, as it is home-consumed, and then
will Barnesville set a shining example
in material industries as it has already
shown out in educational matters.
I call your attention to a statement
made in a recent issue ot ’the Forsyth
Chronicle. It speaks for itself. Read
it and ponder:
“We learn that there has not been
a grain of western corn ground at the
High Falls mills this year. In 1897
the mill ground five or six hundred
bushels up to March ist; during the
same months last year the amount
dropped oft considerably and this
year it hit the zero mark. This speaks
well for the farmers of those sections
of Butts and Monroe counties who
patronize these mills.”
I am collecting additional data for
another article on high taxes and
costly electricity. In the meantime,
in behalf of nine-tenths of the people
of Earnesville, I call upon the city
council to make a public exhibit of
the financial condition of our town
affairs. The citizens have a right to
know just how their public servants
are administering their affairs. I am
sure, Mr. Editor, you will gladly pub
lish a full and complete showing as to
the debits and credits of our money
matters. Let "s have all the light on
the subject possible. A. A. M.
Healthy, happy children make bet
ter men and women of us all. A lit
tle care and a little planning before
birth is often more important than
anything that can be done after.
On the mother’s health and strength
and .-pend the life and the future of the
children. A weak and sickly woman
cannot bear strong and healthy chil
dren. Most of the weakness ;of wom
en is utlerly inexcusable. Proper
care and proper medicine will cure
almost any disorder of the feminine
organism. Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Pre
scription has been tested in thirty
years of practice. It is healing, sooth
ing, strenghthening. It is perfectly
natural in its operation and effect.
By its use thousands of weak women
have been made strong and healty—
have been made the mothers of
strong and healthy children. Taken
during gestation, it makes childbirth
easy and almost painless and insures
the well being of both mother and

Paying Out More Thau is Being
Taken in.
Discussing the financial outlook
next year, from a government stand
point, the Philadelphia Record says:
“Asa matter of fact the cost of
war with Spain has thus far been de
frayed with borrowed money. About
one dollar out of four appropriated
by the late congress was for naval
and military purposes. The revenue
derived from special war taxes has
been eaten up by other forms of ex
traordinary expenditure. The next
congress will, therefore, be obliged to
give immediate consideration to ’he
means of paying accruing debts out
of practically empty treasury vaults.
“With revenues amounting to a
little over $600,000,000 per year and
appropriations aggregating nearly
$800,000,000 per year it requires no
particular mathematical skill to esti-
mate the probable deficit. Continu
ing war expenses and prospective in
crease in administrative outlay in our
new insular possessions must add
materially to the sum of necessary
outlay.”

The Grip epidemic is raging in the

sneezing and running at the eyes and

exception. The best way to fight the

has restored health to thousands of

He Quit Drinking Laud.
A farmer interviewed by the Green
ville S. C., News explained his suc
cess by stating that he had read
the newspapers; that he watched
everything closely, finding that he
could do something on his sixty acres
of land every hour of the year, and
by watching leaks. One statement
of his was of unusual significance.
He said:
“I like whiskey, but 1 am land
hungry.; I want more land. I figured
out years ago that with very moder
ate drinking I’d drink an acre of
good land every year. So I quit.
At the end of a year I tell myself I’m
just an acre ahead at $25 an acre by
not drinking. I find that when I put
it to my neighbors that way it makes
them think. You tell farmers to
think about land every time they
start to buy whiskey, and calculate
how much real estate they are drink
iug or giving away.”
A farmer who is about thirty years
old, with a wife and four /children,
is thus described by the News:
“He looked like that kind of a
man—well fed and well kept. His
clothes were strong and warm and
fitted him well. He was in a well
made wagon, which ran smoothly and
easily and had been taken good
care of. He drove a horse which he
said is thirty years old and can do as
much work as any animal in the
country—a fat, sleek, dark bay, with
evidence of good feeding, currycomb
ing, brush and rubbing on every inch
of his shining skin. The harness was
good originally, it fitted like a tailor
made gown and every buckle was in
place. There was not a piece of
string or grass rope or hickory withe
anywhere about the outfit. It is safe
to bet that the man did not have a
pin anywhere doing a button’s duty,
either. He looked as if he had left a
wife at home who is the same kind
of woman he is a man, and who
watches her husband and children
and house just as he watches his
barn and stables, live stock, tools
and running gear. He has a horse
thirty years old and apparently good
for five years’ work yet, and many a
man loses his horse at twelve or fif
teen years and must buy another at a
cost of SIOO or more, simply from
failure to take good care of him.”

Economy.
A famed economist had an unpleas
ant experience the other day. Dis
economy would, in poor men, be
called meanness*. As he is wealthy,
it is called eccentricity. That is th'e
way of the world. But to the story,
says Moonshine.
It was at a railway station. The
economist was about to undertake a
lengthy journey. He was grumbling
inwardly at the imminent expense of
a railway ticket, at the same time
seeking consolation in the pleasurable
thought that he was going to stay with
friends—free of expense. As he de
jectedly approached the booking ofti
cer a humorist, who had some slight
knowledge ot the thrifty one, ap
proached him mysteriously.
“Excuse me, but I have the return
half of a ticket to Glasgow which 1
cannot use. Give me half a sovereign
for it and it's your’s.”
“I don’t mind seven and sixpence,"
whispered the economist.
After hurried bargaining the ticket
and 8 shillings changed hands. The
economist took his seat with a warm
glow of satisfaction. The ticket col
lector appeared. To him the econo
mist showed the cheaply obtained
pasteboard.,
“Now, your own, sir, please,” was
the remark.
“Have you any idea of traveling
with this ticket?”
“Certainly; why not?”
“Well, you see, it happens to be a
dog ticket,” was the crushing reply.
And the economist had to get out
and buy a ticket, with the pleasurable
knowledge that he had given the hu
morist 8 shillings. Many healths were
drunk that night at the Pig and Pump
at the economist's expense.
