BARNESVILLE. CA.
THURSDAY, APR. 27, 1899.
A HORRIBLE RECORD.
%
Saturday night last Sam Hose, who
committed the horrible deed at Pal
metto recently, was captured at Mar
shall villa, Ga. He was carried imme
diately to Ncwnan, where he was
burned and tortured to death Sunday
* afternoon in the presence of a great
concourse of people. In his confes
sion, Hose said that another negro,
Lige Strickland, paid him S2O to kill
Cranford. A party at once went on
a hunt for Strickland, and finding
him, lynched him at 1 c’clock Mon
day morning. Two other negroes
were implicated in some way and a
search has been made for them and
if they are caught they will doubtless
be lynched also.
These results and the condition as
indicated by them have their impor
tant lessons. One is that certain
crimes have attached to them the
penalty of death, from the hands of
the people, law or no law. Another
is that this is a white man’s country,
and the white man is going to govern
and control, in spite of all influences.
This fact might as well be conceded
by everybody in all sections.
Another thing shown by the death
of Hose is the total depravity of man
kind. Probably there are few people
who do not agree that Hose should
have paid the death penalty for his
crimes, and probably by being burned
at the stake, but the manner in which
he was tortured is a shame upon
mankind. The following extracts
from the reports of his execution,
make a record of which all mankind
should be heartily ashamed:
“Before the torch was applied to
the pyre the negro was deprived of
his ears, fingers and other portions of
his anatomy. The negro pleaded
pitifully for his life while the mutila
tion was going on, but stood the
ordeal of fire with surprising fortitude.
Before the body was cool it was cut
to .pieces, the bones were crushed
into small bits, and even the tree
upon which the wretch met his fate
was torn up and disposed of as souve
nirs. The negro's heart was cut in
several pieces, as was also his liver.
Those unable to obtain these ghastly
relics direct paid their more fortunate
possessors extravagant sums for them.
Small pieces of bone went for 25
cents and a bit of the liver crisply
cooked sold for 10 cents.”
Here is a commentary on total de
pravity, almost, if not, equal to the
crimes committed by Hose.
HON. N. J. IIAMMOM) DEAD.
In the sudden death of Hon. N. J.
Hammond in Atlanta last week, the
state lost one of its ablest men and
purest, best citizens.. Asa lawyer he
was very highly regarded, and really
had lew equals in the United States.
He represented his district in con
gress several terms and made a fine
record there. Probably as a private
citizen he did his best work. He
exerted a wide and wholesome in
fluence upon the people of the state.
He was a great lawyer and a good
man.
TRUSTEE OF THE UNIVERSITY.
Hon. Clark Howell, Editor of the

death of Hon. N. J. Hammond.
The appointment is a good one’ and
Mr. Howell will make a useful mem

predate the honor conferred upon
him.
Headache for Forty Years.
For forty years I nuflered from Blok head

The result was gratifying and surprising, my

used to return every seventh day, but thanks
to Celery King, I have had but one headache

MANY ARE GOMINO-
There will be a great inter-county
teachers institute held in Barnesville
in conjunction with the chautauqua,
July 2 —B. It is not yet known how
many counties will be in the institute,
but quite a number of them have al
ready given positive promise to be
here, and it is going to be a great
season for the teachers. Every effort
will be made to make the event a
most pleasant and helpful *one for
every teacher who attends. The best
experts in the land will be here to
conduct the institute. Already the
services of Dr. W. H. I’ayne, presi
dent of the Peabody Normal College,
Nashville, Tenn., have been secured.
He is one of the great educators of
America. Besides Dr. Payne others
of equal strength and power wilt be
present.
And the teachers of fifteen or twen
ty counties will be here together.
Of course Pike county teachers
will be here.
And Spalding county is coming.
And Upson will come thirty or
fotty strong.
Old Baldwin is coming with twen
ty five.
And Jones county with all her
teachers.
Fayette county enjoyed it so
last year that she is coming back.
And so did Houston county, and
every one of her teachers is anxious
for the time to come again.
Even far away Newton is coming,
writes Prof. W. C. Wright, county
school commissioner.
Yes, and even Monroe county is
coming over the hills to Pike, writes
Hon. Pike Hill, the popular commis
sioner of that county.
Every one of them will be royally
welcomed and Barnesville is going to
see that it is a happy time for every
teacher.
How many more than mentioned
above will be here we cannot now
tell, but quite a number of other
counties arq certain to be here. They
cannot aftord to miss it, and several
of them have already practically
promised to be here. It is going to
be a great inter county institute, and
every teacher in Middle Georgia
ought to be present.
There is more Catarrh in this sec
tion ol the country than all other dis
eases put together, and until the last
few years was supposed to be incur
able. For a great many years doctors
pronounced it a local disease, and
prescribed local remedies, and by
constantly failing to cure with local
treatment, pronounced it incurable.
Science has proven catarrh to be a
constitutional disease, and therefore
requires constitutional treatment.
Hall’s Catarrh Cure, manufacturd by
F. J. Cheney & Cos., Toledo, Ohio, is
the only constitutional cure on the
market. It is taken internally in
doses from io drops to a teaspoonful.
It acts directly on the blood and mu
cous surfaces of the system. They
offer one hundred dollars for any case
it fails to cure. Send for circulars
and testimonials. Address

Negra Killed by Train.
Green Ross, a negro man about
fifty years old, was knocked off the
trestle over Elkins cree'k, two miles
north of Zebulon, and instantly killed
Monday night by the down passenger
train on the Atlanta and Florida road.
He was picked up and brought to
Zebulon and left in the depot. A
curve in the road at the trestle pre
vented the engineer from seeing him
in time to stop the train before strik
ing him.

Earnest Willie's Lecture.
On last Saturday night we were
delighted by hearing a lecture deliver
ed at Antioch church by Will D. Up
shaw, better known as Earnest Willie.
It was well attended. Like all suc
cessful lecturers he is eloquent when
he pleases to be and knows just how
to lead the feelings of his hearers
adroitly from laughter to tears.
First in his “Midnight Reverie" he
led us oft' in the moonlight among the
stars, and the next moment we were
made to sympathize with Zeke Sciog
gins, the embarrassed mountain lover.
Through it all there ran a vein of
gpod humor and good advice that can
only be productive oi good. He ad
monished the young people to speak
pure English and avoid dipping their
tongues into the mud puddle of slang,
spicing his remarks with numerous
mirth-provoking illustrations.
But one could not help noticing
that the application “Earnest Willie"
was not mis applied. He recommend';
innocent fun as a cure for depression
of spirits. All who heard him hope
to see his pleasant countenance
again. O. C. P.
