SOUTHERN PROGRESS.
Within the last few years the cot
ton states have made gigantic strides
in their natural developent. The
states of the south are to day among
the heaviest produces of coal, iron
ore and iron products, and give prom
ise of soon superseding New England
as the center of the cotton spinning
industry. With such a wealth of
progress in her commercial and man
ufacturing affairs, the south is awak
ening to the realization that she has a
bright agricultural future before her.
The low price of cotton is constantly
driving the southern agriculturist to
seek new opportunities for money
making, and he is beginning to rea
lize that more money can be made
on a smaller investment from other
crops to which his land is entirely
suitable.
Experiments have demonstrated
that wheat and corn can be raised at
a profit in the cotton states, and the
average of these cereals is constantly
on the increase. Many of the south
ern states are taking a firm hold on
the truck farming business, and it is
proving very successful. The nat
ural products of the south—early
vegetables—contented the southerner
for years, but with the full apprecia
tion of the money-making opportu
nities, he is beginning the business of
vegetable farming in real earnest.
Waste lands are being redeemed, and
with the advantage of two months in
the seasons, are being made to pay
handsome returns on the investment.
Berries, potatoes and cabbage are the
principal products of the truck farmer
and all are very profitable. Money,
men and brains general development,
and the section that slept for twenty
years after the war is getting squarely
on its feet. Cheap labor, good ship
ping facili ies and hard work, are ac
complishing wonders, and ere many
years we may expect to see the south
the leader in manufacturing, mineral
production and agriculture. The
southern people are alive to the op
portunity, and are seizing it with that
determined spirit that evinces a pur
pase to profit to the utmost. —Balti-

He Got the Fees.
Sagar, the verger of Halifax parish
church, was quite a character in his
way. He figured in several good stories
in Dean Pigou’s “Phase of My Life.”
On one occasion a bridegroom dis
covered after the service that he had
no money with which to pay the fees.
Sagar went to the bride in his most
winsome way and asked her: “Hast
ever seen Black Bibles? We’ve a rare
lot on ’em in this ’ere vestry.”
“No,” she replied, not having the
faintest idea of what a Black Bible
was.
“Coom along. I’ll show yer them.”
He lured her into the inner vestry.
“There’s the Bibles,” he said,point
ing to them, locked up as they were
in a bookcase with glass panels’, of
which he had not the key. “Wait
awhile till I come back.”
He turned the key of the vestry on
the bride and, going to the bride
groom, said: “Lass is all right, but
you’ll no have her till you have paid.”
The “brass” was immediately forth
coming.

A Scapegrace’s Trick.
A good story is told of a young
man, who, besides being of the spend
trift order, is a splendid mimic, and
can imitate his father’s voice to a
nlcity, says the Weely Telegraph.
Not long ago the young man wanted
without delay some money to pay a
bill, and he knew that his father
would treat a request for the same
with cold contempt.
Waiting till he knew his father
would be away, lie went to the tele
phone call room and rang up the
office, calling for the cashier. The
cashier was forthcoming, and when
he was at the other end the young
man imitated his sire’s voice.
“I say, blank, if that scapegrace of
a son of mine come round and asks
for S2O, don’t give it to him. Only
give him $lO.
The cashiet promised that he
would fulfill the commands. Not
long after the son called at the office
and demanded S2O. He was refused
by the conscientious cashier, and ap
parently in anger, the young man
contented himself with the $lO.
When the old man reached the office
there was a scene.

■ow They Made Mummies.
A body might be mummified in
three different ways, and the price
varied accordingly. In the first and
most expensive method the brain was
extracted through the nose by means
of an iron probe, and the intestines
were removed entirely from the body
I through an incision made m the side
with a sharp Ethiopian stone. The
intestines were cleansed and washed
in palm wine, and, after being cover
ed with powdered aromatic gums,were
placed in Canopic jars. The body
was t en filled up with myrrh and
cassia and other fragrant and astring
ent substance and was laid in natron
for 70 days. It was then carefully
washed and wrapped up in strips of
fine linen smeared with gum. The
cost of mummifying a body in this
fasnion was a talent of silver, or
about
In the second method the brain was
not removed at all, and the intestines
were simply dissolved and removed
in a fluid state. The body was also
laid in salt or natron, which, it is said,
dissolved everything except the skin
and bones. The cost of mummifying
in this mannpr was 22 mintu, or near
ly S9O.
The third method was employed
for the poor only. It consisted sim
ply of cleansing the body by injecting
some strong astringent and then salt
ing it for 70 days. The cost was very
small.—“Budge’s Guide to First and
Second Egyptian Rooms.’’

A SUry of Patti .
A San Francisco newspaper man
tells this story about one of Patti’s
visits to that city: “The diva step
ped from the train, and after inhail
ing a lungful of fog, remarked: ‘Oh,
this is heaven! All my troubles are
paid fori Thank heaven, I breathe
the air of San Francisco once again!”
This was all very sweet in the high
priced canary bird, and the newspa
per boys were all delighted. How
ever, it was only a short time before I
went down to the train to meet Pat
ti at Salt Lake City. She was des
cending from her car, and as her
feet touched the ground she ex
claimed: “Thank heaven, I breathe
the air 01 Salt Lake City once more!
All my troubles are paid for! Oh, this
is heaven!’ The newspaper boys
were delighted with her. As for my
self, on both of those occasions I was
delighted also—with the diva’s lovely
hypocrisy, that accursed sin which
the poet tells us takes the best men
in. I never thought Patti much of
an actress, but I changed my mind
in this respect after witnessing these
two exhibitions.”
