BARNESVILLE, GA„ THURSDAY, MAY 25, 1899.
I HERE AND THF.RE,.
i
Mr. Judson Strickland, editor of
the Thomaston Times, has been re
commended by Congressman Bartlett
for census supervisor for this district.
The position is for two yeais and pays
SI,OOO per year. Mr. Strickland
went to Thomaston from Corcord,
and is a gentleman fully competent
to discharge with satisfaction all the
duties of the office.
Mr. R. H. Maddux left last Friday
for Mississippi, where he went on an
important business trip. Mr. Mad
dux is the senior member of the firm
of Maddux & Son, and they have
been doing a nice business since
opening in Barnesville.
The Speigle place on Zebulon street
is being improved. Anew roof is
being put on, new rooms added and
other important changes made. It is
a valuable home place. The people
are glad that Mr. Speigle, with his
family, has moved back to Barnesville.
Commencement is only a couple
of weeks oft. The faculty and pupils
of Gordon Institute are making every
preparation for presenting excellent
entertainments. It will be an inter
esting commencement.
Dr. J. B. Mathews from Zebulon,
was in Barnesville Tuesday, greeting
his numerous friends and looking
after business matters. Dr. Mathews
is not only a very efficient and ac
commodating clerk of the superior
court but he is a good man and a |
very popular citizen. He is highly
esteemed throughout the county and
section.
The burglars have been having a
successful time about Lifsey Springs
recently. They have made two suc
cessful raids on the store of Mr. J. C.
Lifsey. each time securing quite a lot
of dry goods and groceries. The loss
to Mr. Lifsey is estimated at two or
three hundred dollars. The burglars
went up through the floors, and made
good their escape, leaving little or no
clue as to their identity.
Messrs. Jackson G. Smith & Sons’
vest pocket dictionary, like their ve
hicles, is the best thing of the kind
seen. It contains 30,000 words and
is chock full of the most useful infor
mation. This firm believes that
knowledge of buggies gives power to
decide in favor of Smith’s buggies,
and hence they are anxious to furnish
all information they can to the people
who want vehicles.
Mr. John Perry, a Barnesville boy,
is making a live paper out of the
Cordele Daily Hornet. The paper
has a good patronage from the citi
zens and it is an influence in the
community. Perry does not hesitate
to speak his mind on all questions
that come up tor consideration.
The people of Barnesville rejoice
over the gradual improvement 01 Mr.
Milton W. Smith, who has been in
bad health for some time past. He
is now able to ride out occasionally,
and there is a decided improvement
in his condition. Everybody hopes
to see him soon permanently restored
to health and strength.
Coming to BarncMville:
We are in receipt of a letter from
Dr. J. M. Bosworth of Atlanta, who
asks that it be announced in the col
umns of The Gazette that he is
improving fast from his recent sick
ness, which prevented him from com
ing to Barnesville to meet his en
gagement with many on the 20th, of
this month, and that he will be in
Barnesville at a very early day, the
time bei.ig announced in our col
umns probably next issue.
Dr. Bosworth was taken suddenly
with congestion and came near dy
ing three weeks ago. He is fast re
covering.
There Will be no Picnic,
The Sunday School picnic an
nounced for Friday at Wellmaker’s
pond, has been indefinitely post
poned and there will be no Sunday
School picnic this year. The com
mittees met Wednesday morning
and after discussing the question
they decided that it would be best
not to have the picnic.
I)r. Boggs to Preach.
Dr. W. E. Boggs will preach sev
eral sermons at the Presbyterian
church, while in the city. He will
preach there Friday night, Saturday
morning and Sunday. Dr. Boggs is
an able preacher and he will Le
heard with interest by the people
here. While in Barnesville he will
be a guest of Dr. J. P. Thurman.
Ordination Service.
It is expected that an ordination
service will be held at the Baptist
church Sunday, at which time Dr. T
J Watts will be ordained as a min
ister of the gospel. These services
are always full of interest. Dr. J. M.
Brittain, the pastor, will be in charge
of the service, assisted by visiting
ministers.
A Liberal Contribution.
The meeting at the Methodist
church came to a close last Thursday
night. These services lasted for ten
days and large congregations attend
ed all the time. Dr. B. Carrodine
did all the preaching and a great
many professed the second blessing
during the meeting.
A voluntary donation at the close
of the meeting made to Dr. Carro
dine amounted to $165,00, showing
that his services were highiy appre
ciated.
Exceedingly Busy.
Messrs. Jackson G. Smith & Sons
can hardly get men enough to turn
out the buggies lor which they are
eceiving orders daily. They have
put on quite a number of new men
and are now building and shipping at
the rate of nearly two hundred bug
gies per month. These orders come
from every section of the south.
Their business is very satisfactory.
W. 11. Orenr Dies.
Saturday morning Mr. W H. Orear

He was a citizen well kno vn through
out the community and was seventy
.wo yeais old. For years he has suf

It is just these people that Dr. Pierce’s
Golden Medical Discovery is designed to
aid. It is the strong, helping hand for
those who are in the extreme of bodily
weakness and nervous exhaustion. It
promptly tones, nourishes and builds up
the entire system. It gives keen appe
tite, good digestion, pure blood, muscular
strength, nerve-force and renewed activity.
“ When I first wrote you I was completely dis
couraged," says Mrs. W. M. Satterly, living at
Kiehford. Tioga Cos., N Y. (P, O. Box 40), in a
letter to I>r. Pierce. " I was in pain all the time,
could not lie in bed on account of severe, sharp
cutting pains in my back and right hip. Had
pain all through the lower part of my laxlv and
my elbows hurt me so muc h I could scarcely
lift my baby. My skin was dry, harsh and
scaly and hung like sacks 011 my arms. My
husband called the doctor, and he? said it was
weakness, and my age. His medicine did me
no good. I kept getting worse and weaker. It
seemed I should go crazy. One day I wrote
you and received advice. I have taken Hr.
Pierce * Golden Medical Discovery, his ‘ Pa
vorite Prescription ’ and ' Pleasant Pellets.' and
now I can lie in laid with some comfort and can
do a good day s work. "
The most valuable book for both men and
women is Dr. Pierce’s Com
mon Sense Medical Adviser.
