FALL IS GOOD TIME
TO PAINT BUILDINGS
SAYS COUNTY AGENT
“Although spring is often thought
of as clean-up, paint-up time, there
is perhaps no better time for paint
ing than during the dry fall months, ’
County Agent Bill Brigham declared
this week.
Mr. Brigham said that during hot,
mucky weather any exterior painting
may soon blister and peel. He declar
ed that moisture collects on the sur
face of the wood in periods of high
humidity.
“When paint is applied over this
moisture film, it does not bind firm
ly to the wood and latter the vapori
zation of the imprisoned moisture will
cause bubbled,” he said. “Painting a
damp surface that will soon be ex
posed to direct sunlight is the worst
possible practice.”
The county agent further suggest
ed that it is best to paint outside only
when the weather is dry, free of
dust, and not too warm. For this, fall
weather is usually ideal, he said.

Low Income
Farmers Can Cut
Fertilizer Bills
Low-income farmers in Miller and
Seminole counties are being pointed to
away by which their fertilizer bills
may cut in half.
Hugh E. Gleaton, farm supervisor
for the Farm Security Administration
in Miller and Seminole Counties, said
today that the fall planting season
brings opportunity to provide for the
land some of the elements of commer
cial fertilizer, particularly nitrogen,
and that this course is being urged
upon all Miller and Seminole County
farmers on the FSA program.
The idea, said Mr. Gleaton, is to
plart nitrogenous cover crops, like
vetch, Austrian peas, blue lupin, and
crimson clover.
“Studies by the Farm Security spec
ialists,” he said, “have shown us that
families on FSA program spend for
fertilizer more than for the combined
items of clothing, education, church
obligations and self-improvement.
“The budget of our families in Re
gion Five (Alabama, Georgia, South
Carolina and Florida) include a total
of five and a half million dollars a
year for fertilizer. Nearly half of
commercial fertilizer is nitrogen, so
that our families, all of whom are low
income farmers who need essentially
better living standards, spend about
two and a half million dollars for
this nitrogen, much of which they
could provide for themselves simply
by planting cover crops.
“We are trying to urge upon these
families, therefore, to grow their own
fertilizer—not only to provide a larg
er margin for their own living, but
to help the land and to increase their
crop yields, in some cases of cotton
.and corn by two or three times.
“After all our talk about the need
of new crops, we find that we are
not doing half what we could with
the crops we have. We hope to con
vince the families on our program
that they can do more, and at the
same time have more for themselves,
by use of cover crops.”
GOOD PASTURES
It may not be true that pastures can
be developed in Georgia that will give
continuous grazing for 12 months of
ibc year, but certainly this can be ap-
proached in most sections if proper
consideration is given to the plants
that are adapted to the va
rious sections and soil conditions,
to the plants that are adapted to the
various sections and soil conditions,
the growing season of the plants and
the proper management to get the
most from them. Some valuable in
formation on pastures for Georgia
may be obtained from the county
agent.
