Local Girl Wins
First Award
In Cattle Show
ALBANY, Ga., Dec. 16.—Georgia’s >
marching livestotck industry passed ■
another milestone here Tuesday when:
experts placed the “best ever” label i
on animals shown in the ninth South
west Georgia Fat Cattle show and
sale.
The greatest triumph of the event
however, was scored by a girl, Mitzi
Gummings, of Donalsonville. She ex
hibited the grand champion. Although
approximately 250 entires were judg
ed, this 11-year-old, brown-eyed lass
carried away the prize ribbon.
Livestock leaders at the show had
nothing but praise for the animals
exhibited by 4-H Club members, F.
F. A. boys and adult stockmen. Own
ers of fat steers displayed were sche-!
duled to fatten their pocketbooks,
I Wednesday morning at the cattle
i sale, the final event of the two-day
* program.
Wins Over Boy, 11
For the past two years Mitzi
■ only narrowiy missed the grand
■ championship, and Tuesday her 1,230-
■ pound steer came through with flying
'colors. Mitzi, a 4-H Club member,
j won over Richard Rancw, 11, of
• Dougherty County, who showed the
■ reserve champion.
I This lad's animal won second place i
I in the 4-H heavyweight division, An- J
other steer captured third place for'
Richard, also while Mitzi won first
in this division. Dewey Lee Maxweh,
of Dougherty County, showed the F. i
F. A. grand champion. ;
All winners were honored Tuesday;
night at a banquet where speakers
reviewed the progress of Georgia’s
livestock endeavors and cited finan
cial advantages of the industry to the
' State.
All Georgia Bred
R. H. Cratrce, buyer for Cudahy
Packing Company at the Albany
stockyard, keynoted these opinions
about the show with the remark: “At
last we have a show where all the en
tries are Georgia bred, Georgia rais
ed and Georgia fed. This makes me
feel mighty good, because in the past
. we have had a lot of Texas cattle in
the competition,"
Said C, M, Shackleford, general
chairman of the event for the Al
bany Chamber of Commerce: “Last
year we thought we had reached the
top, but the grade is much better, a
great deal better.”
The fact tthat exhibitors hailed
from a larger area than ever before
pleased Dougherty County Agent J.
j C. Richardson, who declared, “The
1 quality of Georgia cattle at this show
‘ exceeds any we ever had.”
Tom McMullan, district agent for
i the state extension service, comment-
I ed: "Here are cattle that are just as
, high class as can be found anywhere,
j not only in breeding but in finish.”
OTHER WINNERS
Other 4-H winners included: Light,
i Wylene Hayes, Billy Hayes and John
Arthur, all of Dougherty County;
medium, Bubber McDowell, Jim Ar
' thur and Jimmy McDowell, all of
: Dougherty County,
I F. F. A. winners: Light, Leonard
i White, of Blakely, first and second,
- John Lee Hayes, third; medium, Jam
es White, Blakely, Eldridge Ragan,
Cuthbert, and Garvan Harris, Hopeful
heavy, Dewey Lee Maxwell, Dough
erty County, first and third, and Doyle
Maxwell, Dougherty County, second.
