SCHS scores victories in boys and
riris basketball tournament action
w-
IT’S TOO EAKLY to know for sure, but the outlook at the
present is that Seminole County High School will send
two teams to the state B basketball tournament in Columbus.
Coach Jere Tillman’s In
dians have already earned a
spot in the boy’s meet, and
they will play in Columbus on
nexv Thursday, March 5, at
6:40. The enemy will be the
4B champion, Clarkston.
If the Indians advance, their
games win! be at 6:20 on Fri
day, and the championship
game comes at 8:30 on Sat
urday.

The Indians will be going to
the state meet for the first
time since 1959 when Zack
Williams was the coach. Jere
Tillman has been the Indian
Chief for four seasons, includ
ing this one.
Also going to Columbus will
be the Blakely Bobcats. The
Indians defeated the ’Cats in
the sub region tourney, but
the two teams met again in
Pelham for the region top
spot after they had defeated
Manor and Atkinson County,
champs of the east side of 18.
(This is a new playoff sys
tem for this region. Under it,
two teams from each side of
the region meet in a playoff
to decide which two teams to
represent the entire region of
18. Thus Seminole defeated
Blakely in the finals at Ash
burn, and this meant Seminole
was no 1 in the west side, and
Blakely no 2. At Pelham, this
sides no. 1 and 2 teams met
teams 2 and 1 from the east
side. After the easterners
were eliminated Friday night,
Blakely and Seminole had to
play again to decide which
was to be the overall no. 1 and
no. 2 team.
(This is why Blakely was
no 2 in region IB west, and
Seminole was no. 1, but now
the Bobcats are no. 1 in the
entire region of 18, and the

Indians are no. 2. What this
proves is a mystery.
(Under the old system,
there was an eastern champ
and a western champion and
both went to the state with
out a playoff. This was a sim
pler system but someone did
not like, and it was changed.
(If the explanation is not
clear to you, don’t feel alone.)

The Indians made it to the
playoffs by defeating Miller
76-47, Terrell 70*-64, and the
’Cats in the final game 78-65.
Blakely had defeated Pel
ham and Vienna.
• ♦ ♦
The Squaws defeated Ter
rell 42-18 and Miller 57-45,
and were meeting Pelham in
the finals Wednesday night at
8:09. The girls play the same
system as the boys, so both
Pelham and Seminole are sure
of a spot in the final region
playoff to be held in Douglas.
Seminole and Pelham will
meet Nahunta and Pearson at
7:30 and 9:00 on Friday night
of this week, and the final
game comes on Saturday at
8:00 o’clock.
♦ ♦ ♦
Nahunta would be remem
bered as the team from whom
the Squaws won their current
state championship. Their
star is Annie Ruth Johns who
has been scoring 40 to 60
points a game during the reg
ular season.
If the Squaws make it to
the state meet again, it will
be their ninth trip in the past
10 years. They picked up a
trio of state crowns in that
period, coming out on top of
them all in 1956, ’59 and ’63.

You’ll win. too, by joining
with the Stop Polio Program!
Everybody GO Stop POLIO!
Sponsored by the Lions Club of Donalsonville, Doctors
and Nurses of Seminole County
Q. What are STOP POLIO SUNDAYS? \
A. A series of Sundays when Sabin oral polio vaccine will be
administered to every man, woman and child in your com
munity, in a voluntary mass immunization program that
can wipe out poliomyelitis from the area. March 1 is the
first Sunday of this three part program.
Q. Why a STOP POLIO PROGRAM?
A. POLIO IS STILL A DREADED DISEASE and hits many
people in the United States. The SALK VACCINE has
reduced the number and severity of polio cases, but has
not eliminated polio. Many people have not received the Salk
Vaccine. Even if they have, they may still be a virus
“carrier.”
Q. What is Sabin polio vaccine?
A. A “live virus” vaccine developed by Dr. Albert Sabir, and
licensed by the United States Public Health Service. There
are three types; each gives lasting protection against a
certain kind of polio. Over 300,090,000 people in the world
already have received Sabin vaccine; it has been proved
safe and is endorsed by the American Medical Association,
the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U. S. Surgeon
General.
Q. What types of vaccine will be administered here?
A. All three types. Type I will be given on SUNDAY, March 1.
Type 111 on SUNDAY, April 5, and Type II on SUNDAY,
May 10. You should take all three for complete protection.
Q. How is the Sabin vaccine taken?
A. By mouth 2 drops on a tiny sugar cube. Infants over 3
months and very young children receive the
dropper directly into the mouth. It is odorless, tasteless,
causes no side reactions or after-effects, regardless of age,
sex or allergy. Even diabetics, pregnant women and mildly
sick persons can take it safely.
Q. How long will it take to get the vaccine?
A. Only a few moments. A simple registration form called a
“request” form is necessary. You may use the one printed
on the back of this folder. It will also be printed in the news
paper. You can save time if you will clip it out, complete
it at home and bring it to the polio prevention center. Then,
you simply pick up your sugar cube with the two drops of
Sabin vaccine on it and pop it into your mouth.
THAT’S ALL .... Doctors, Nurses and Pharmacists will
staff each location.
Q. How much will it cost to get the vaccine?
A. CONTRIBUTIONS ARE VOLUNTARY. 25c OR MORE
IS SUGGESTED. If you can’t pay that amount you may
contribute whatever you are able.
Q. Can I get the Sabin from my own doctor?
A. Os course. But your doctor is cooperating with STOP POLIO
SUNDAYS. He is contributing his time and services be
cause he knows that mass immunization is far more effec
tive than individual treatment. Infants too young to receive
the vaccine now can receive it later from their private
physician.
Q. What if I have already had Salk Polio Vaccine Injections?
A. Everyone must take the Sabin vaccine to eliminate polio,
even though you have taken or are presently taking the
Salk vaccine. Salk vaccine provides temporary immunity
and requires “booster” injections at intervals. Sabin vac
cine gives lasting protection against all three types of
polio and prevents you from being a VIRUS “CARRIER”.
It is important for older people who are potential carriers,
to take the vaccine. . . this will Protect The Children.
Q. What can I do to help the success of this program?
A. You and every member of your family take Sabin Type I
on Sunday, March 1. Follow through and take Type 111 on
Sunday, April 5, and Type II on Sunday, May 10. Finally,
remind everyone you know about STOP POLIO SUNDAYS.
