A Deserved Compliment
Star of Hope Lodge, No. 34, I. O. G. T.,
Mt. Vernon Ga. May 28th 1886.
Fesolreil. That this Lodge tenders its moat
sincere thanks to the Messrs. Conner for the
exquisite music dispensed by them at onr late
i entertainment, and we shall ever wish that
their pathway through life maybe strewn with
flowers.
A true extract from theminntesof the Lodge,
D. C. ScrroN, W. C. T.
A. H. Bazemoke, Bec’y. pro tem.
In connection with the above we desire to
state tlint the following merited tribute to the
above named gentlemen, written by onr re
viewed of the en‘ertainment, “Zadoc,” for
for publication last wee.k, was omitted simply
because it was written on the wrong side of
the paper, and not discovered until our atten
tion was called to it after the paper was print
ed and published:
“One of the most pleasing features of the
entertainment, was the exceedingly fine music
• contributed by the Messrs. Conner, on the
violin and organ, as well as vocal. It was re
marked by many that the music was the most,
attractive single feature of the entertainment.”
Marriage of the President-,
[Special to the Montgomery Monitor ]
Washington D. C. June 3rd ISB6.
Grover Cleveland, President of the United
States, was married at the White House last
night, to Miss Frances Folsom, of N. Y.
Rev. Dr. Sunderland of the first Presbyterian
church officiated. The bride was given away
by Benjamin Folsom, her uncle. Only near
relatives, and members of the cabinet and their
families, were invited, and the wedding in all
its details, was plain and unostatious, in con
sequence of the recent death of a relative of
the bride.
Father’9 Advice To His Sen.—
“Mv son, I have heretofore presented you
with a copy of the Holy Bible. If you study
only one book let that be the Book, as tho
truths it contains ‘are able to make you wise
unto salvation.’
I herewith present you with a copy of the
recent edition of Webster’s Unabridged Dic
tionary. If you study only two books let this
be the other, os it is not only a dictionary
unsurpassed in the spelling, pronunciation and
definition ot words, but is also an encyclopedia
of information in its Vocabularies of persons
and placees noted in Fiction, Scripture. Greek,
Latin, and Geographical Names, Biographical
Dictionary, Quotations, Pictorial Illustrations,
Ac., making it a book to which you will have
occasion frequently to refer during life.”—
President, Manon Female College.
American Enterprise.—
No invention of tho nineteenth century lias
worked a greater revolution in household econ
omy or conferred more of a benefit on humanity
than the sewiug machine.
The first productions were crude and uncouth
iu the extreme, and it was reserved for Ameri
can skill and ingenuity to bring forth a machine
of any partical value.
In order to appreciate the great advancement
which has taken place it is only necessary to
compare one of the machines built during the
infancy of the invention with one of the latest
improved “Light-Running New Home.”
All the really good points contained in other
machines have been utilized iu its constitution.
Many now improvements and devices have also
been added, the result of which is a machine as
nearly perfect as it is possible to make one.
For simplicity, durability, ease of manage
ment and capacity for work, the “Light-Run
ning New Home” has no rival, and the happy
possessor of one may rest assured that he or she
has the very best the world affords. See ab-
VEIITIHEMENT ON ANOTHER PAGE OF THIS PAPER.

Degradation of Swearing.
Tt is no mark of a gentleman to swear.
Che most worthless and vile, tho refuse
if mankind, the drunkard nud the
prostitute swear, as well as tho best
tressed and educated gentleman. No
oartionlar endowments are required to
live a finish to the art of enrsiug. The
asest and meanest of mankind swear
with as much tact nud skill as the most
refined; and he who wishes to degrade
limself to the lowest level of pollution
nid shame, should learn to lie a com
-non swearer. Any man has talents
•nough to barn to curse God, and
imprecate perdition on theruselevesand
heir fellow men. Profane swearing
never did any uian any good. No man
is the richer or wiser or the happier for
t. It helps no man’s education <>r man
ners. It. commends no one to any so
ciety. It is disgusting to the refined,
abominable to the good, insulting to
those with whom we associate; degrad
ing to the mind, unprofitable, needless,
ind injurious to society; aud wantonly
to profane His name, to call His ven
geance down, to curse Him, and to in
voke His vengeance, is perhaps, of all
offences, the most awful iu the sight of
God. — Loul/i.
