LOCAL ITEMS.
. —Watermelons aro getting ripe.
—Cloudy and threatening rain to-day.
—Come to the celebration Saturday week.
—Col. Charles D. I,oud left on Tuesday for
a tiip of several days’ duration to Darien.
vitit to Wilcox county. He will be absent for
sevaral days.
The wife of P. tor Clifton, just over the
line in Tatuall Co., died on Saturday last. Wc
learn that fever of some kind, was the cause of
her death.
Lsir. F.H. Solomons, withl. Epstein A- Dro.,
Savannah, Dry Goods Ac., was drumming our
town yesterday.
‘ ''
—Mrs. Galbrcath. a very aged widow lady, in
Iha western part of the county, across the riv
er, is quite sicH.
We saw a nalligntor Jn the ’Gater Cave at
• JUMillau's mill last Saturdav. A youth shot
* ft With a pistol, and it “sunk to rise no more.”
—We are under obligations to Mrs. W. J-
MoDongald for a mess of fine large tomatoes
for dinner Monday, the first r'pe ones we have
seen. Also for other vegetables.
_ Mr. J, W. Morrison of this place las a hen
that stands upon the fence and crows. If she
was a woman, now', she would wear thebr, veches
and want to vote, like Susan It. Anthony?
—Wiley Thigpen of this place was up before
Justice Mclntyre on Monday, charged with
whipping his wife. He was bound over in a
bond of one hundred dollars, to answer the
charge, at the next superior court.
We have a few more Baptist Hymn Books on
hand which we will sell cheap. Just the thing
otir Baptist friends ought to have, compiled by
an eminent Baptist Minister for his own As
sociation, and printed by us for him,
—Wo are reliably informed that Mr. M. B. Ad
ams, near Bill, in this county, has corn that
measuras ll 1 /, feet to the silks. He will make
fifty bushels to the acre he thinks, and if so,
we apprehend he can take the premium as the
best farmer ir. this part of the state.
1 —A cool wave from the coast struck us on
Saturday evening, and it has not been so un
mercifully hot since. Monday morning it was
raining in torrents, and the wind blew a storm
from the east and south-east. We hear that
considerable damage was done to the corn
crop by the wind. Mr. David Higgs says his
crop is about ruined.
—We dreamed last night that Blisses Della
Mcßae and Agnes Adams would like to visit
this office and see something of the mysteries
of printing, but are afraid we would put their
names in the paper. Oh, no! we wouldn’t do
snob a thing! Come on, girls, don’t be coy.
- i-- — ,-r pome day that isn’t
—On the day of our next issue our postal re.
lations to the world will have considerably
improved. The new daily route from Lumber
City will go into operation, and we will have a
money order department at the office at this
place. Both these things are improvements of
great magnitude to our citizens, and arc ev
idences of our progress and prosperity as a
people.
Good Templar's Entertainment.—
The Good Templar’s at this place have deter
mined to give another of their interesting
public entertainments on the night of the 3rd
of July. From what the public has already
seen of this I .edge iu the way of an entertain
ment, we cannot hesitate to assure them of a
good audience, and that audience of a good en
tertainment.
—We are requested to state that Rev. Jos.
M. Smith will preach at this place on the 3rd
Saturday in July; and on the next day will meet
v with the brethren and sisters to constiute a
church. If he meets with sufficient encour
agement, the services may be protracted for
several days. On Saturday night before the
2nd Snndav will commence a meetir-jof several
davs duration at Wax Hill* And on the 4th
Sunday will commence a protracted meeting at
Geth*emane.
—I: n> very desirable to tv.: ark that the
Sunday School celebration at tins place on the
3rd of Jnly is a county cclolnation, i ‘ o Mt.
Vernon affair. It belongs pu t i ■ much to tie
members of the county Schools a*, it docs to
those of the town. Ii is to lie a i iciiic, or cas
ket dinner, and it is important that tin- ie «-
ture should not be overlooked by our pcoph
Big baskets and plenty of 'em should be the
prevailing idea. We all wish to nrakt if a sue
cess, and all should work with that eml in v\w.
Everybody is invited. C
I'; S. And don’t forget the bs-ket.-.
COIUIESPiiN DEN CE.
From Spring Hill.
June 21st 1886,
The funeral sermon of Mrs. Sarah E.
Mcßae was preached at this place yes
terday, by Rev. J. E. Seated.
We heard that Charlie and Kenneth
EeLeunen had ripe watermelons on the
twentieth.
It began raining this morning. This
will be bad for the melon crop. .
liev. C. C. Hines preached at Towns
yesterday afternoon. By tho way, a
certain young gentleman of Towns, who
has been visiting our village quite often,
was looking very dejected yesterday, and
drovo about aimlessly, as ho said, to
drive away his disappointment. L. G.
Fortm r Scraps.
“I wish it would quit raining so I
could finish plowing,” is heard ou every
side.
Messers. Jackson, Elder & Co. wont
through town this morning, en route to
Allentown, with their steam engine and
saw. They have boen sawing for tho
Messrs. Gillis.
Mr. Marcus, of Augusta, who is an un
cle of Mrs. Morris Dawson, is visiting Mr.
and Mrs. Dawson, and expects to remain
with them some time if tho country air
benefits bis feeble health.
Sheriff Mixon, of Johnson county,
came down and arrested a negro who
was in the employ of Mr. A. J. Gill'.s,
last Saturday, supposing him to have
escaped from the chniu-gaug. It is not
believed by the people here that he is
the right man.
I don’t think udv ono can c. mplaiu of
the hot weather, now. Mrs. E. Ricks
has bt-eu wishing she eonhl go to some
cold climate, for her health. Slio now
thinks the climate of tho “great city" of
Fortner, is cold enough. One young
man says he thinks it frosted Saturday
night. Guess he went to soo his gir!
and got tho “cold shoulder" turn ! to
him, atid of course it chide! him to the
heart.
Ail the railroad crew passed through
town to-day, cu route to their work,
which is a few miles from hero. Some
lawyers came through on Saturday, tak
ing deeds to the right of way, but bad
to Stop at Mr. Thigpen’s till the survey
ors got further, as most of them l;a l
been sick, and bad made poor arced.
Sohap.
——
From Red BluIF.
We were sorvy to hear that the work
on the new railroad had been suspended,
and we hope the troublewill be adjusted
in a few days, and the work completed.
There is nothing of so much interest to
the farmers and people gen rally in
this county as that road. It will place
on the market some of the finest limber
in Georgia. It will enhance the value of
lands, and give the farmers a market
for all they can raise, and thus pro
mote tho growth and prosperity of the
county, and of almost every industry,
and the people would be sorry to hear
that tho railroad had failed.
Capt. James A. Riddle, of Me. A i-rnon,
spent Sunday with friends at the Rlufl.
We are always glad to s<e the Capt.
Ho is a clever whole-souled gentleman,
aud always ready to encourage and fos
ter any enterprise.
Mr. Smith and Mr. Culver have dis
covered a new remedy for bedbugs,
to wit: Saturate the bedslead well with
kerosene oil I thou set tbeoilon fire*, ami
and carry the bedstead to tho slab pit;
throw it in and mend up the fire. This
is the remedy that they tried, and now
they sleep in peace and quiet on the
floor.
The Monitor has many warm friends
at Red Bluff, and none better than the
colored boys at the mill, who are alwajs
glad to see the paper come, and the rert
of our colored friends, as well as the
whites, should follow their example, and
thus make themselves acquainted wit!
what is going on in the county, and fos
ter home industry, which is the daty
of every citizen of the county. B. &C.
The Hon and the Hornets.
One day a hen was scratching in a
flower bed to get some food for herself
and her little chickens, but as bbe did
not find fodder right away she became
enraged and spit on her h.-:;ds, and then
tore up the earth like a cyclone. It so
chanced that much of the dirt foil on a
neighboring hornet’s nest, and in about
two seconds the Ben was notified ■>
vamoose which, she gladly did at a 2:‘
gait, and when she got where she could
catch her breath she was heard to re
mark that she didu’t know it wa
loaded.
Moral. —Don’t try too hard to “C ’me
np to the scratch” when yonr efforts are
destroying other people’s happiness.
