Holmes, to be found in our paper to-day. He is a good man and “worthy and well qualified’ for the place. - The Primitive Baptist Church at Hamilton Hill will hold their quarterly and sacramental meeting at that place, commencing on Friday before the sth Migday in this month. —We arq in reciept of along and strong ni tical from J. 11. Daily, of Red Bluff, on' a'very interesting subject to every Southron. It will appear unit Week. *".' We are sorry to hear that she did not derive that benefit from her tiip that she hoped she would. Marrleff —. On yesterday, August 18th 188fi, hv M. D. Hughes, J. P., at his residence four miles from this place, Dr. Martin Morrison to Miss A. L. Armfieid, both of this place. We exteuA our . heartiest congratulations to the happy couple. —We bad the pleasure on last Saturday, of en joying tne hospitality of Judge E. A. Holmes, of Zaidce, and his excellent wife and accomplished daughter. The Judge is a good farmer and a fine talker. Mrs. Hi is a model farmer’s wife, the young lady intelligent and pretty. The dinner was good, and the grapes were ripe.— Gentlemen, what more could we want? —Rev. J. Quarterman, of the commission from Savannah Presbytery, preached a very interesting series of sermons during the meet ing that was commenced on Saturday morning and concluded on Sunday night. He is a flu ent and eloquent speaker, and impresses the hearer with his own doep earnestness—that he feels evorv word of what he says. His people here love him. And so do we. —The following officers of Star of Hope Lodge, I. O. G. T. were installed nt the meeting last Friday night, by H. TV. Carswell, D. G. W. C. T., to wit; M. D. Hughes, \y. C. T. ;Mra.M. M. Peterson, W. V. T.; Miss E. May Sutton, Sec'y. ;B. F. Herring. F. S.; John Poe, Treas ; Daniel Peterson, C.; Willie C. Mcßae. Al.; Jerome J. Bazeraore I. G.; Robert Rogers, O. G.; Miss Uranie Mo- Ilm*. R. S.; Miss Mary Stanford, L. S.; , Miss Agues Adams, Ass't. Sec’y. i A Real Necessity. - i We presume there is hardly a lady to 1 be found in onr broad land who. if she does pot already poß.seas a sewing ma- 1 chine, expects some day to become the owner of one. i But after the mind has been fully made np to purchase eneof these indispensable i ni ticles, the question arises as to what kind of a machine to buy. 1 It should be so simply constructed thut the must inexperienced can suc cessfully operte it. The other points > mainly to be considered, and which ar« the most desirable, are durability, rapid ity, capacity for work, ease of operation, regularity of motion, uniformity of ten biou and sileuce-wllile in operation. - The “Light-Running New Home”' fills the above requirements, and is said ' to combine the good points of ail sew- ! iug machines, with tbeaddition of mauy ; new improvements and labor-saving : l devices. ' 1 The price is no higher than that of ' • other machines, and every lady who is j 1 the happy possessor of one may rest as- , .■ acred she lias indeed a treasure. Sek i ! ADVEIiTISKMKNT. From Lothair. - The protracted meeting, which lasted for ton days at this place is over, and we believe some good was effected, as we had uo rain iluriug that time, nud things • dried off to some extent. But the meet ing being over, the rain is again upon ns, and my foodder, oh my fodder! Holidays aro also over with all but a few, who it seems, desire to prolong their j vacation by engaging iu no permanent j business, but they ere few, for which 1' we are glad, because idleness is the j mother of mischief and when people are at work, you know, times aro quiet. 1 Saturday was court day, but there was f no busiuess on docket. An election was held for a justico of the peace, which resulted in the selee- I tion of Dan. W. Wall, to fill the vacancy • of J. A. Dunn resigned. Mr. Wall will 1 make a good officer uo doubt. lam in [ debted to Mr. Jno. A. McCrimmon for I some sample peaches, known as stump I the world. The name is appropriate, J! and Mr. Me. is justly entitled to the but ( ton, besides many thanks. I offered I one year’s subscription to the Monitor, I as a premium for the largest watermelon this seasou, and sure enough, that noble gentlemen Mr. James Counoil is champ ion , for the largest, but theu everything about him is big. He is u big mau, and has a big heart, and sonl, and is worthy of all commendation. Long may helive, ■ and like myself, grow fatter. Judge Jno. N. Miller, I am sorry to say, is seriously ill with cold and sore throat, but hopes are entertained for his speedy recovery, and as he is a candi date, pefihaps it will be best for him not to be sick too long. That is all now. Nothing more tliauk you. Dunns. Logan. Ed. Monitor:—l will give you a few dots from This place. We are having i much rain at the present. Our fodder ' crops seem to bo iu a critical condition! Hands seem to be scarce. Look out, j boys; if some of you don’t get to work, j I will make application to vagrant you, in order that the roads may have n little vacation. There are three iu this neigh borhood who have not earned a square | meal in three months. I guess when they read this they will know who I have reference to, and will try to help some mini save his fodder. Rev. G. R. Watson preached at Mt. Pisgali last Sunday. Ido believe that place affords the prettiest girls 1 ever j suw, though iny sweetheart wasn’t out. I hope I will not he disappointed next time. The dogs seem to be wearied, barking at the candidates. So boys, get to work, with the understanding that we will vole for B. F. Herring for Tax Collector a the ensuing election. J. Ivf. H. Hamilton Kill. George McQueen lias a good school. There will be a protracted meeting at Mt. Pisgub on Friday before the second Sunday in September. Candidates and fleas are plenty. Wonldn’tit be best to kill a few of them? j We have got our teeth sharp for Old j Land Mark. P. W. Boy, hunt np u re ply. Mr. Sam Smith had open cotton over a week ago. We hope better times aie ahead. Potatoes are doing fine. Singing next first. Sunday. Tiger Creek is too full for fishing. Our up-country friends have returned to their homes. Come again. Boys, will it do to elect P. W. B. for coroner? Some eay, “i reckon.” Wm. Hamilton says lie wants a wife, j I hope some lady w ill accept. M. J. COURT CALENDAR—OCONEE C’IRCUT.
