York court, in a difficulty between John and

verely cut with a knife, by Hugh Gillis.
—Poetry is not required. ‘ At best it is but
“prose insane” as Southey says, and the home
made is generally of a piece with poke salad,
sorghum syrup or rye coffee. Wo don’t use it.
—One generous citizen proposes that if we
will get a lot and build on it—residence or of
iioe for the Monitor- thus indentifying our
self with the town and county, and giving as
surance of the permanency of the paper, that
ho will give us ten thousand feet of lumber to
build the house. We accepted the proposition
And now comes 1 orward another generous cit
izen who agrees to contribute the lot to build
on. We accept that also. And if it should
occur to some other public spirited gentleman
to offer to furnish the carpenter to build the
house, we might accept that.
—We must tell it. We have been suppress
ing it far two weeks, hut like murder, it “will
out.” We have been made an Honorary mem
ber of the Woman's Church Aid Society, of this
place. As it is a Woman’s Society, and an anx- j
iliary of the Presbyterian Church, we had some |
fears that we might not be able to exactly coa
lesce, so to speak, we being a man and an aux- 1
i iary of the Methodist Church, and we so ox- :
pressed ourself to the fair secretary. Cut we
were at once assured that attendance upon the ;
meetings was not compulsory. Indeed, we are ’
of the opinion that with the Honorary mem
bers, nothing is compulsory, except the Honor
—and the Aid. Wo feel grateful for the com
pliment, and shall endeavor so to demean our
self as a member of the Society, that while the
Society reflects honor upon us, we may i.ffcct
Aid upon the Society, so that “all things shall
work together for good,” etc.

Lot.
' On the night of the 23rtl a lamp
exploded at the house of Henry Burke,
on the turpentine farm of Mcßae ic
Pritchett, w hile Burke was sitting read
ing tiy it. It exploded near the door,
and set the bonse on fire. Mrs. Burke
nrose from her bed, with an infant in
her arms, and escaped uninjured through
the flames. A. J. Jones got his feet
burned, and J. E. ‘Hickson got bis arms
seriously burned, and oue of the chil
rtren is suffering from being burned.
The fire was snbdned without more se

We hail the pleasure of being at tin

tist church at Lotliuir on last buuday.

Wo hear very little said about the po

The hogs are all dying tip with the
cholera. Wo have never seen at worse.
Hogs will bring a good price this fail, m
munv farmers will not have one to fatten.
Mr. Butler Wilkes, of Ml. Vernon,
was at Red Bluff this week.
M. C. Adams, Mt. Vernon’s popular
Justice, was also here this week.
Mr. Burwick, ot Lothatr, was here al
so here this week.
