—We bad a heavy rain Monday night.
—Are you all done on the prize watermelon
question? We are all but aching to publish
the result. Ain’t you?
—Very much thanks to Mr. Everett Adams
for a splendid two-foot watermelon brought in
last Thursday. It was not entered for the
prize, but it was good,
—The Trustees of Mt. Vernon Academy are
requested to meet at the Academy to-morrow
afternoon at 1 o’clock. A full attendance is de
sired, as business of importance will come be
fore the board.
On Monday some of our Methodist brethren
started around with a subscription paper for
purpose of raising money to build a church,
mid in a few hours they had raised nearly half
the amount necessary; and during the day they
met with sufficient encouragement to Justify
them in advertising the letting of the contract.
Hce notice to contractors.
Snaix.—
—Last week Thomas Horn, colored, brought |
to this office a set of snake’s rattles con- j
tabling ten rattles, which he took from a snake
which he had killed. Rut yesterday William j
Kitchens brought us a set of fourteen rattles |
which lie took from a snake lie killed a few |
miles from here a short time ago. He says it j
was live feet long, and about the size of the j
calf cf his leg.
—Mrs. If. W. Carswell sends us a few po- j
tatos, of the while yam variety, as specimens
of what she can do in two months. It was ex
actly two months from the time the slips were
set out until the potatos were dug. One that
we measured wasllj, inches in ciremnferance,
and the others very nearly as large. Me did
not weigh them, but what was more important,
we had ’om fried for supper.
—Candidates should bear in mind that we
lute a good job press and outfit fir printing
election tickets, and will print them as cheap,
and do the work as well, as anybody anywhere
can do. There is no excuse for any candidate
to go out of the county to havo his tickets
printed. Any man who has no more county
pride than to go out of his county to have his
work done, when he gains nothing by it—saves
no money, and gets no better work— is not fit
for any public trust; anil that act ought to beat
him—and will.
—The many friends oi Daniel McGregor of j
this place wore shocked to hear that he was ;
stricken with paralysis while sitting at supper
last Saturday night, since which time he has
remained in a precarious condition, very nearly
helpless and speechless. Uncle Mack, as every
one calls him, is one of the oldest citizens of
this place, and from his long connection with
the public in thecaapaeitv of a boarding house
keeper, lias made a host of friends throughout
the state, who will be exceedingly sorry to
hear of his sad affliction.
—Hon. M. H. Mcßae, of Telfair county, paid
ns a short call on Monday morning last. He is
a gentleman of fine address and commanding
appearance, with superior conversational abil
ity, and is well up on the political situation,
and the legislative wants and necessities of
the times. He is a candidate for senatorial
honors, with a good chance for election, and if
elected, it is safe to say that the 15th district
will have a senator of whom they may well be
proud. He is a good man, and would make a
good senator. Besides, he is very popular in
his own county. It is nothing until the elec
tion, and you must soon make np your minds
npon these senatorial and legislative issues.
The Earthquake.—
Tuesday evening about 9 o’clock, our citizens
were excited by the shock of an earthquake
that shook things np quite lively for a while.
The shock lasted for about a minute and a half,
and was accompanied by a rumbling noise,
something like that of a railroad train. It was
sufficient to wake us up out of a sound sleep,
to shake chickens off the roost, make dogs howl,
and make the house creak and the windows
rattle like thunder. It seemed, from the niose,
to come from the sonth, and to pass off to the
north. Tyn minutes later there was another,
and then, in a second or two, a third shook.
Thiß was without question the most severe
earthquake that ha* occurred on the Atlantic
coast of North America, within the range of
history. Quite a munlier of onr old citizens
say they never experienced anything of the
kind before, bnt all comprehended what it was
iustanly. No damage is reported, farther than
the frightening of the nervous—and nearly ev
erybody is nervous.
—We got eight subscribers yesterday eve
ning, handed in by 8. E. Bright, colored. Ho
is a colored gentleman—a colored brother of
lours—onr brother in black. At any rate lie’s
all right.
—The boarders at the Collins House made a
break for freedom Tuesday night. They could
stand being cooped up very well ’till the earth
quake came, but that was the hair that broke
the earners back’
Earthquake Notes.
—Torn Smith rail over to parson linzo
more’s “to see if they were shaking loo.”
—Jack Collius>ays that “in a grout ;
i many places there’s been a groat many
1 thiugs that was littler, than that.”
I
—Phil. Mcßae says it made hint think i
| of God Almighty mighty strong.
—At Mcßae & Pritchett’s it rang the
; bell, nud nearly scared the heller to
death.
Alex. Peterson nud Eddie Rogers
[ didn’t feel it or hear it. When the;

it ’til next morning.
—lt shook the shingles oil the houso
at Christopher Mcßae’s.
Mrs. Carswell had said not an hour
before it came, ou hearing her husband
read an account of the earthquake in
Greece, that she did wish a little one
would come here. They say she don’t
feel that way now.
