McCullough has been right sick for a week or so. —Mr. Charles Beugnot, of Red Bluff, paid us a cftll on Friday last. He was cn route to Da rien and Savannah. The Colored Baptists hold their Association at New Hope, in the- lower part of this county, commencing to-day or to-morrow. —Our office was honored, on last Thursday afternoon, by a visit from Mrs. A. McQueen, Mrs. Bennie Higgs and Mrs. Jas. A. Riddle. Wo are always glad to sec the laiclcs. Call of ten. —A protracted union meeting of the Presby terians and Methodists, is given out for this place, to eommeue.c! next Sunday night, and to lie conducted by Rev. W'. A. Jones and Rev. A. H. Bazemore. _THe citizens of onr little town were startled j by an alarm of fire, Tuesday night. It turned j outto be McNutt Sl Go’s, plankkiln, Which was . destroyed, with several hundred feet of lam- j her. It was Wiggins's work. Communion Service. - —Will be held at the Presbyterian church at this place next Sunday. Preparatory service at 3 o'clock p. m. Saturday, at which all the! members aie requested to be present. The Baptist Association, which convenes j to morrow, with the church at Harmony, some eighteen miles above here, in thisteounty, will be an interesting occasion. Many are going from this community. We understand that there will be several eminent divines present. —The dedication of the new Methodist church at Lotbair, which was expected to come off on the 3rd Sunday in October, will be ■deferred to some future time, on account of the inabilaty of Dr. Potter, Editor of the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, who was to dedicate it, to Attend at that time. —Rev. Joseph M. Smith, the Baptist minister who has served the congregation at this place, has closed his ministerial labors for the year. He goes up to the Association with a good ree- | ord and a clean conscience. We cannot but tostify to the excellence of his demeanor, both in and out of the pulpit. —As our paper goes to press soon Thursday morning, we capitally doubt our ability to give | our readers the result of next Wednesday s ■ election in our uext issue, if issued at the usual hour. We shall therefore not issue our paper next week until Thursday afternoon, so as to he able to give our readers tno result before it is a week old. Just Look at This.— W'e want everybody who owes us one cent to come forward, without waiting to bo specially called upon in person, and pay us. We are straining every nerve to raise the money nec ary to move our family to this placo from up per Georgia, and we need every cent. It will inconvenience no one to pay us the small sum due us, but all those amall sums put together, and paid, would enable us to be re-united with onr family, none of whom wo have ever seen since we first came among you last spring. We shall probably never be in such a strait again. Think of our condition, and help ns. We shall consider those who respond to this call as our personal friends. This is not intended to refer to those who have recently subscribed or renewed, on time. —Tile nights are geUing a lit dr cool out tuo ! days arc hot enough for August. | —Whenever we drop a candidate's name out of onr announcement column, you may take it for granted that he is no longer a can didate. —What do yon think of a candidate who is not only too stingy and penurious to announce in his county paper, but attempts to secure his election by sponging upon other candidates for his tickets? HV think he is unworthy the suf frages of his fellow citizens. r —We had to give up a good job this week, because our stationer in Philadelphia, refused to ship us paper by express as ordered, on ac count of his prejudice against the Southern Express Company. Ho accepted our southern money and shipped by height, writing ns that it would cost us too much to ship by express. It would have cost us about BO cents more than by freight, but we would have got the goods; and we would have made over six dollars that we have now lost, for want of the paper Prize Watermelons The Result— ■ —Below we give the result of the competi tion for the prize of a year's subseripton for the largest watermelon, grown in Montgomery county, brought in to us during the melon sea son of 1886: 1.
