A Silent Bell.
Something very, very sad happened
near the corner of Monroe avenue and
Randolph street yesterday. A very
meaty man had met three friends at that j
point and stopped to tell a couple of
stories. A young roan, who was a
• tranger to ali, was leaning against the j
front of i store, healing the general ap-j
pearance of oi ■ who knew all thut was
worth knowing before ha cut liis baby
teeth, and was now hanging onto life
because death refused to come. Pretty
poon the meaty man got off some fun,
.hi 1 the hand of the weary young man
was lifted up and the tones of his chest
nut bed rang out on the fnorning air.
“Was that you?" asked the story
teller a* ho wheeled around,
“Y-'ius.”
•Did I get off something old?”
"Very old.”
"Beg your pardon, sir, I will now
get off something entirely new for your
benefit.”
Ho seized the weary trnvlef, whirled
him around, and ii stout calf-skin boot
' was planted against him four times in
j succession.
• •if there's anything old about that
just ring two bells on me, said the
kicker ns he ceased Ins labors.
I inn-1 have been a new thing. The
voting man had tears in his eyes as he
: steered himself around the nearest cor
ner, nnd the sharpest ears caught no
melody from his little bell. —
