Take your county paper. Do not l>e t
without it. Whatever other papers may i
be to the world, ir is the paper for yon. j
iNo other can take its place. It adver
j tises your business—it is to your interest
jto support it. It advertiser, your home
—it is your duty to .sustain it. It Udows
you, and yon cannot ignore it. Neither
yon nor it can he independent ot each i 1

identical. Hence the citizen who i* ,

The Lawyer and the Judge.
The late poet-lawyer, Angnstns J. Re- j
qnier, was not afraid of anything. Ap- t
pearentlv as gentle as u lamb, bo had
within him the tierce spirit that flamed i
out in his war poetry, and when he was j j
mad lie let it blaze.
Just after the surrender he went to
New York and opened a law ofiica.
The judges and lawyers rather resented ,
bis coming, and held aloof.
One day iu the courtroom, the judge i f
told Requier that he would not hear j ,
from him on a certain point, as his mind | 1
was fully made up. The lawyerasmiled. ! ,
They had been treated that, way often. ) 1
In lacfc, northern judges display great.; ]
rudeness towards members of the liar.
In this instance it pleased the crowd to
see the “rebel lawyer” shut up.
Requier courteously expostulated.
The patience of the judge gave way, and
be sharply told the sneaker to sit down.
Then a peculiar light gleamed iu Ke
qnier’s eyes, hut, his demeanor was as
calm as ever.
“Before taking my scat, it it please
yonr honor," be said iu bis quietest
tones, “I desire to know if the court ha- ;
dually and irrevocably decided that I
shall not be heard?”
“That is mv decision," replied the:
angry judge.
“Then,” and now there was a resonant
ring in the lawyer’s voice, “I fall hack
upon my constitutional right. I ask for
nothing. I demand to be heard!"
The bar looked on in astonishment,
and the judge glared about iu a stupidly
dazed way.
“The constitution says,” continued
the bold advocate—
“Go on, then!” shouted the oeurt.
“Never mind the constitution. Proceed i
with your argument,"
There was a buzzing all over the
courtroom at the audacity of the “little I
rebel," but never after that day did the
judges and lawyers treat the fiery Re-1
qaier with anything but the utmost |
courtesy. They had found that he was j
not to bb trifled with.
