dicted- Oh, for a County Court, to take cog
nizance of such affairs!
He was Not a Native. -
It should have been remarked last week, per
haps, but was omitted in ihe hurry of getting
out the paper, that T. J. Kitchens, the white
peddler who committed the unparalleled bru
tality upon the young white girl, Janie Toler,
iB not a Montgomery county mam He is, we
learn, from Washington county, and as has
been suggested to us by an esteemed friend,
may be a relative of that other Washington
county monster who was caught “In the Toils”
down here in 1883. It would seem that there
must be some affinity between them, as the
one is the most stupendous liar, and the other
the dirtiest villain, that any county in the
State can produce. Montgomery county don’t
produce such monstrosities, bu; will claim the
credit of punishing them when caught.
—Mrs. Christopher Mcßae, wh ■ )>■

better we are happy to state.

A Sad Death.
Little Mabel Norman, eldest daughter of
Col. and Mrs. R. R. Norman, of this place,
died at 12 o’clock Sunday night last, under cn
cuinstauces of peculiar sadness, one was ac
cidentally struck with a bast-hall bat a short
time ago, but it was not a serious wound, and
no importance was attached to it, until in
Thursday of last week it developed into ery
sipelas, which bade defiance to all efforts of her
physician, Dr. Morrison, and of Dr. Sasuett Os
Savannah, whom he called in consultation.
She was about nine years ..hi, and had 1 con
amongst ns only since January. But she was
a bright, sweet child, endowed with a brilliant
mind and a lovely disposition, and by her en
dearing, womanly ways, had, in tl at short
time, won for hot ■ elf a warm place in the !•< arts
of all our townsfolk, youn at. i old. ;>he v
everybody's pet; every one sympathized w.:
her in her sufferings, and sorrowed at her
death.
She was a member of the lodge of Juvenile
Templars, and so true was she to her pledge,
that, when urged by her physician to take a ■
little toddy, though too delirious to know her
own mother, she exclaimed, wildly and vehe
mently, “I can’t! I can't take it.' I belong to 1
the lodge!” Her truth and her fidelity were
intact, though her reason was dethroned.— j

Her body was embalmed and kept until yes- :
terday, when she was buried at tho Mcltae
burying ground, two miles above Ihis place, i.i
the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing
friends—her schoolmates, members of her
lodge And Sabbath School. The sympathies of,
the entire community go out to the afflicted j
family, in this their sad bereavement.

JOHN 13. CiOI G’d'd LAST AND BEST BOOK
PLATFORM ECHOES. I
This new and splendidly illustrated volume
; is tin* last !> ' k written by the world-famous '
John B. Gough, and was complete l by him
just previous to his death. Every one is
- tumid..r with the st -ry of his early life, and of
1 his rescue from a drunkard's grave, and how
! this onco w i tehed and despised sot became ,
one of the most fatuous men of our time. For I
seven years he stood amid the horrors of de
lirium tremens, an abject slave to the bottle;
and liis condition and wretched appearance
wero such as to cause people to exclaim,
‘•There’s the man who has bet uin hell.” The
rich atul poor, the high, the low, tho learned

moved by his burning words, lie swayed bril

in State prisons, jails, poor-housi-g, peniten
tiaries, reform schools ami houses ot eorree-
Sioii; to the deaf, and dumb, and blind; to
an ii- iu'es composed wholly es outcasts; and
to audiences numberingth-msa tdsof children.
At his feet more than ten million people sat
xnd listened iu admiration and wmnler. In
his library may be seen a set of large volumes
;-a fur better memorial of h’s life and labors
than .’ily monument of marble or bronze—con
taining tho i riginal m iiatmes of one huu
