They Say.—
That our pleasant young friend, Charlie D.
Mcßae, has } .me to Dublin to read medicine
under Dr Hicks; and that every one wishes
him all success ill his studies, aud a speed;
return to his native haunts.
That Miss Addie Adams has gone on an ex.
tended visit to WalthourviUe and Hazelhurst,
and that on her return she will be accomj an
ied by a charming young lady from the former
place.
That Miss Mamie Mcßae, a winsome, and
withal most excellent young lady of our little
city, graduated on last Thursday from the
Rome Female College; that she is now visiting
Miss Bonnie Pursely, of Ala., and that Miss Bon
nie will bear Miss Mamie company when tbe
latter returns to her home in this place.
That it the Gate City Guards were not al
lowed to visit the Queen’s domains, they (the
G. C. G.) ltsvo the satisfaction of knowing
that they did not undergo the strain that fell
to the lot of the Boston Artillery Company,
namely, that of “wining and dining” the Prince
ofWalos. It is a comforting thought, that
although “they” are sorry for the Atlanta boys,
“they” hope the Boston boys will get all the
baked beans they want.
That a certain young dude of the ville, who
is distinguished among his friends as a talented
banjoist, has a bouquet that was presented to
him in consideration of his cheerfully perform
ing on his favorite musical instrument, and for
furnishing chin-music for the delectation of
the donor; that the sprig of moss was, at last
accounts, growing beautifully in a glass of wa
ter; that it is soon to bo removed to an earthy
home, whence it is predicted it will soon be all
over the country. Don’t be alarmed if you see
it coming. Omta.
Another Art Craze—
The latest art work among ladies is known
as the “French Crazo,” for decorating china,
glassware, etc. It is something entirely time,
and is both profitable and fascinating. It is very
popular in New York, Boston and other Eastern
cit ies. To ladies desiring to learn the Art, we
will send an elegant china placque (size 18 in
ches,) handsomely decorated, for a model, to
gether with box of material, 100 colored de
signs assorted in flowers, animals, soldiers,
landscapes, etc., complete, with full instruc
tions, upon receipt of ouly SI.OO. The placque
alone is worth more than the amount charged.
To every lady ordering this outfit who incloses
the address oi five other ladies interested in Art
matters, to whom we can mail our new catalogue
of Art Goods, we will enclose extra and with-I
ont charge, a beautiful 30 inch, gold-tinted
placque.

The First Watermelon.—
The first Montgomery county watermelon of
the season, weighing 22'/, Bis, was presented
to us on the 18th instant by D. 8. Williamson,
of Mcßride. It was red meated, ripe and de
licious. We awarded him a prize of a subscrip
tion to the Monitor for it, besides which he
will accept cur kindest consideration. Sir.
Williamson raised the melon that took the
prize tor the largest moldu in the county last
year, and he sava he is going to enter the lists
this year, but that need not discourage others,
as there were larger melons raised in the
county last yoar than the one that took the
prize, though they were not entered.

JOHN B. GOUGH’S LAST AND BEST BOOK,
PLATFORM ECHOES.
This new and splendidly illustrated volume
is the last book written by the world-famous
John B. Gough, and was completed by him
just previous to his death. Every one is
tamiliar with the story of his early life, and of
his rescue from a drunkard’s grave, and how
this once wretched and despised sot became
one of the most famous men of our time. For
seven years he stood amid the horrors of de
lirium tremens, an abject slave to the bottle;
and his condition and wretched appearance
were such as to cause people to exclaim,
“There’s tho man who has been in hell." The
rich and poor, the high, the low, tho learned
and unlearned, have been alike thrilled and
moved by his burning words. He swayed bril
liant audiences of royalty and fashion; spoke
iu State prisms, jails, poor-houses, peniten
tiaries, reform schools anil houses of correc
tion; to the deaf, and dumb, and blind; to
audiences composed wholly of outcasts; and
to audiences numbering thousands of children.
At big feet more than ten million people sat
and listened in admiration and wonder. In
his library may be seen a set of large volumes
—a far better memorial of his life and labors
than any monument of marble or bronze—con
taining tho original signatmes of one hun
dred and fifty thousand lueu and women who
were induced to sign the pledge through bis
personal efforts. These names—many of them
tear-bedewed and written with trembling hand
—represent stories of happiness and woe, of
ruin and remorse, of blighted hopes and lives,
of battles fought and victory won. To give
some of these thrilling life histories; to depict
scenes of joy and sadness; to lift tno curtain on
life's stage and show its tragedy and comedy ;
and to draw “living truths” from the lessons
thus taught, and bring them home to every
heart, is the prime object of this volume. It
also contains tho history of Mr. Gough’s life
and career, from the cradle to tho grave, and
the story of bis death told by Rev. Dr. Lyman
Abbott, the eminent editor and divine.
“Platform Echoes” is John B. Gough in print.
Stranger stories are hero told than romance
ever dreamed of, every one oi them drawn
from real life by a master hand. In every
chapter ho weaves in anecdote after anecdote,
iucident after incident, story after story, and
underneath them all lie “Living Truths” that
stand out as beacon lights. He plays upon the
reader’s feelings ns with an enchanter’s wund,
at one time filling his heart with gladness, at
another blinding his eyes with tears. At his
bidding, hearts are melted, and stern, strong i
men, as well as sensitive women, weep tears of
compassion, are nronsod to indignation, or
moved to uncontrohihlo laughter i:i spite of
eyery i If >rt to control their feelings.
Its illustrations are the best we have ever
seen. It Contains two hundred and tw .nty
seven tine engravings by the best artists and
engravers in tho world. Many of these ilins
tiations are “too JVniny for anything," while
others depict wretchedness and woo. Sixteen
of these engravings are full-page ones, and are
magnilieieut specimens of art. Two hundred
and nine are text illustrations. There are two
fine steel-plate portraits. One is from a life
size, full length painting, showing Mr. Gough
as lie appeared shortly after his rescue. The
other is from a photograph taken just before
his death. All 111 all, it is one of the finest
ever produced by the American press.
We advise our readers to buy Platform Echoes
at the first opportunity. They can. in our
opinion, much better afford to dispense with a
dozen otln r hooks than not possess this. Om e
begun it will not willingly be laid aside til! the
last page is finished. A. L. Adams
