—The heated term still continues.
—New line of flowers at Mrs. Rackly’s.
—Mr. D. S. Williamson brought in
some fine melons on Monday.
—Wreaths of all colors and prices at
Mrs. H. J. Wright’s.
—Get your hats from Mrs. W. L. D.
Rackley, and save your money.
—We had a glorious rain yesterday.
Just in the nick of time, too, for we had
begun lo suffer pretty badly.
new lot of black lace straw hats
at Mrs- H. J. Wright’s.
—Onr town subscribers can always get
their papers early on Thursday morning
by calling at our office or sending for it,
—We understand that brother Cook
says the people of Mt. Vernon are the
best people lie ever saw, to be as mean
as they are.
—Miss Laura Rackley, a niece of our
fellow townsman, W. L. D. Rackley, has !
arrived in town, and will enter iuto the |
busiuess of dressmaking, in connection
with her aunt.
—Mr. Z. T. Mauu brought to town a
load of very fine melons yesterday. We
are under .nauy obligations to him for
one of the finest of the lot. Mauu’s
melons are noted for their size and ex
cellence of flavor.
—There will be a picnic at Peterson
next huturday. All are invited to come
and bring their baskets. There will be
one or more speeches, and you will no
doubt be abundantly entertained. Our
Peterson friends can do up a thing nice
ly when they try. Aud they are goiug
to try, this iime.
—We are rejoiced to learu that Mr.
John C. Adams, who has been so ex
ceedingly low with typhoid fever, is now
in a fairway to recover. Dr. Morrison
it-entitled )o great credit for the con
summate skill he has displayed in this
case, for to bis treatment alone the young
man owes his life.
Our alliance iriends had a nice time
at a picnic at Lapsley’s Lauding, on the
4th. Cols. W. L. Clarke aud R. R.
Norman, of Mt. Vernon, aud Col. B. B.
Cheney, of Eastman, were the orators.
All of them made good speeches, Col.
Clarke makiug the great speech of the ,
day. The dinner was superb, and there !
was anabunduoce of it for all. We had j
the promise of a fall account of the pro
ceedings, but it failed to materialize.
From a Second Story Window.
Mr. J. Preston Clements, ot Erick, in
this county, happened to a very serious
accident in Savannah ou Saturday morn
ing, the 4th inst. He, with his wife
and mother-in-law, stopped at the Mor
rison House Friday night, and early ou
Saturday morning he went into the bath
room for some water, and in attempting 1
to return he mistook a window for the ,
door and stepped out, falling about 30
feet to the brick pavement. He was in- j
sensible when picked up and carried to I
ttie hospital, hut his wounds, though se- j
veie, were not considered dangerous, by ]
Dr. Duuu, the altending physician.
Double Wedding.—At the honse 1
of A. J. Hall,of Seward, in this county,
ou last Sunday evening, July sth, inst., !
J. J. McArthut Esq. united in marriage, j
Mr. Asa Brantle> 'o Miss Ettie Hall,
aud Mr. Geo. W Oliver to Miss Jbbie
Hall. The brides were sisters, and were
daughters of Mr. A. J. Hall. The
grooms were both citizens of Montazu
ma, Macon county Ga.
Capt. McArthur has made a rather ex
traordinary record on marriages in that
family, havingwitbin thelast6or7 years
joined in matrimony, six of Mr. Hall’s
daughters and one son. There is anoth
er daughter left, the prettiest of the lot,
so it is said, and it is to be hoped that
when Cupid's dart shall smite her heart,
she will not go back on the family rec
ord, hot secure the services of Capt.
McArthur to unite her to her destiny.
