CO O/V 71 COMM iSSI ONERS FIX TAX RA TE FOR 1908 One of the important transac tions of the regular meeting of the County Commissioners held here Tuesday was to fix the tax rate, which was placed at. $15.35, including both state and county. The state rate had previously been fixed at $5, while the county rate, which also includes the school tax, was fixed at $10.35. Engineer Goo. il. Crafts of Dublin, was awarded the contract to furnish the cement tiling for ttie walks to be placed on the court house square. The contract for the fencing and curbing was not awarded at this meeting. Mr. E. \V. Rawlings was given the contract to raise the bell in the court house and increase its sounding qualities by placing a cement floor in the bell tower, thus making it more substantial ami better in several respects. This work will proceed at once. Thej matter of fencing the public square will he taken up later. Another very important matter up for discussion was that of building the bridge across thej Oconee river. Rather than placo! a direct levy of tax upon the peo- 1 pie at this time, the Commission-j era decided to submit the proposi-; tion of bonds for this purpose, and the question will be voted upon at! the regular election in October. A! direct levy would, at this time,; prove a burden to the taxpayers, but by building the bridge with a bond issue will not be felt by the people, and is a safe and conserv ative manner of making the much needed improvement. It will be remembered that the bond question was twice veted upon for building the court house for the county, but did not carry; and as a consequence the tax rate was very high for one year. It is very probable that this sad expe rience will be remembered at the election in October, and that a bond issue will.be called for by the people. No better investment could be made for the countv than a good and safe bridge across tho river. Even at this time the river is impassable at the public ferry, I STATIONERY I I I | High-Class .Stationery for g f FULL School Work and Social | I LINE Correspondence i 1 | DfICT Tablets Box Papers \ ' ■ Exam. I i_ RETURNED TO ATTACK UPON SENATOR HOLDER j Atlanta, Sept. T, —The Georgian , this afternoon returned to its at- I tack on Senator John N. Holder both by cartoon and editorial. P. Knight of the Sixth, to which he | replied to-day on a question of personal privilege, denying em- ] i . i phatically the charges made by j the paper.
