fice of Clerk of the Superior
Court of this county, and his
card is a strong appeal for the

Mr. Currie, in years gone by,
served both as tax receiver and
collector, and is well known'
throughout the county.
Judge J. C. McAllister makes
formal announcement of his can
didacy for re-election to the of
fice of ordinary. In filling the
unexpired term of the late Judge
McArthur, Mr. McAllister has;
given excellent service. He
needs no introduction to the peo- i
pie of Montgomery county. . j

best known young business men
and farmers, residing on his large
plantation a short distance from
Eastman. He is a young man of
many fine traits of character. He
is to be congratulated on winning
such a splendid little lady for a

Pioneer Atlanta Woman Dead
Atlanta. —Mrs. Julia Carlisle With
ers, pioneer Atlantan, who was the
j first baby to be born in Atlanta —
when it was just a settlement and call
|ed Terminus —died here. Mrs. With
| ers was born in August of 1842, when
I Atlahta represented nothing more m«t
--| ropolitan than a beautiful expanse of
| meadow land. On the spot where the
! Equitable building now stands was the
spring that furnished water for Mrs.
Withers’ home, which stood nearby.
Committee Inspects Blind Academy
i Macon.—Members of the legislative
committee who inspected the Georgia
Academy for the Blind were warm in
their praise of what that institution
is doing for Georgia’s sightless chil
dren. They were shown through every
department of the institution by G.
F. Oliphant, the superintendent, and
gained visible evidence of how the
I handicapped little folk are converted
| into happy, useful and self-sustaining
i citizens.
Automobile Drops Into Creek
Columbus. —Taylor county has been
! made the defendant in a damage suit
i in the sum of $15,000 filed in the
| United States court here by attor
neys for A. J. Burroughs, a Greenville,
| S. C., drug salesmen, who claims he
; was seriously injured by having his
| automobile drop into an uncovered
creek some five miles out from Rey
nolds, on the night of September 30,
this year. The suit is to be heard at
; the May term of court in Columbus.
Two Additional Ships For Savannah
Savannah. Two additional ships, it
is announced, have been assigned the
Southern Maritime corporation for the
Cuban trade. Several vessels which
have been sailing for Cuba from New
York and touching at southern ports
will, it is said, now sail from Sa
vannah and other southeastern ports.
Big Peach Orchard for Schley County
Amerieus. —Robert L. McMath, pres
ident of the local oil company, an
nounces that he has acquired 225
acres of farming land in Schley coun
tv, more than 150 acres of which will
be devoted to the culture of peaches. I
The tract just purchased by McMatb
is located at Walls’ crossing, four
miles west of Ellaville, and is pene- j
trated by the Central of Georgia from j
Columbus to Amerieus. Already there*
are 2,000 bearing peach trees on the |
land, and this number will be largely j
increased.
