SNAKES USEFUL TO FARMERS
Prey on the Gophers, Which Do Such
Enormous Damage to the
Growing Alfalfa.
A fullgrown bullsnake in a Kan
sas alfalfa field is worth at least
$"2.50 a month to the farmer on
whose land he lives. This is the i
statistical deduction of experts at
the Kansas State Agricultural col
lege. They arrive at it in this way:
There are on the average six go
phers to the acre, and they damage
the alfalfa crop to the extent of
about $2.50 a month. A bullsnake
of this kind can keep an acre free.
The calculations are those of F. j
L. Hisaw, iuammalogist at the col
lege, and J. B. Kogers of its zoology
department.
“A fullgrown bullsnake,” says Mr.
Hisaw, “is capable of eating all the
gophers on an acre of alfalfa in one
month, and during the six warm
months of the year is able to clear
six acres.
“Alfalfa growers should take seri
ous thought of the economic impor
tance of these harmless snakes. By
protecting them a great deal of time
and money can be saved in trapping
and poisoning gophers and other
rodents.
“The bullsnake feeds on rats and
mice when around the barn or gran
ary. The only return he asks for
his loyal and valuable service is the
right to live an undisturbed life.”
MITIGATION

“I hear your wife has hit you with
a flatiron?”
“Yes, but only with the flat part!”
“SEES" IN THE DARK.
At a distance of (500 feet, in total
darkness, Samuel 0. Hoffman of
San Francisco asserts that with the
aid of a delicate instrument for the
detection of heat waves he can tell
whether one, two or several persons
are present. His invention is a com
bination of thermopiles, a reflector
and a galvanometer. The instru
ment, which acts much as a sound
detector, is sensitive to heat waves
and can be developed to the point
where a complete silhouette of an
/ objective can be given, showing the
outlines from which heat waves ema
nate. It can also bey used for the
detection of airplanes thousands of
feet in the air.
MEXICO FIGHTS ILLITERACY.
Illiteracy in Mexico is decreasing
slowly under the efforts of volunteer
teachers. Over 1,500 teachers have
enrolled for the task, and probably
1,000 of them have been accomplish
ing good results. About 10,000 il
literates have been fortunate enough
to receive an impulse toward im
proving themselves. The National
university, which is at the head of
the national education system,
grants certificates to these volunteer
teachers, who serve without pay.
Some others, without any formal
recognition from the university,
have been doing good work where
they can, among their servants anc
neighboring poor.
