NEARLY ALL MINES
IDLE, SAYS UNION
600,000 MINES, INCLUDING 100,000
NON-UNION, ARE REPORTED
TO BE IDLE
WANTS FEDERAL OPERATION
Borah Makess Suggestion Advocating
Experiment In Government Owner
ship Os Coal Industry
Washington.—Quiet celebration of
the anniversary of the eight-hour day
in mines marked the first days
of the. oountiy-wide strike of union
coal miners, so says the Associated
Press.
In the mteantime. however, an al
most complete suspension of work was
reported by union headquarters in
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana,
Kansas, Missouri, lowa and other
unionized district in Pensylvania; both
the bituminous and anthracite dig
gings were shut down.
From Kentucky it was reported
that work would continue under a
contract which had another year to
run. In West Virginia the operators
said the mines would be reopened
on an open shop basis. In
Kansas union chiefs said that the
strike would continue despite an in
dustrial court order for a temporary
extension cf the old contract.
No effort toward federal interven
tion was reported, administration
leaders holding that any such action
must be based on the existence of an
emergency which, they said, does not
yet appear to exist as supplies of
coal for from three to eight weeks are
on hand.
Senator Borah, of Idaho, chairman
of the senate labor committee, how
ever, suggested that the necessity for
government operation of the mines
might arise. “If the coal industry
does not recorganize in the interest of
the public, it will be up to the public
to try the experiment of government
ownership,’’ he declared in a state
ment.
ARKANSAS LEVEE FALLS
AS FLOODS RAGE AT BARRIER
Only Emergency Rampart Os Sand
bags Saves Broad Acres From
Disastrous Inundation
Helena, Ark. —Like a thunderclap
from a clear sky a section of levee
125 feet long, crashed into the Missis
sippi river at Old Town, seventeen
miles south of here, at midnight and
within a short time members of the
sheriff’s force and police department
were going from house to house rout
ing out men capable of handling pick
and shovel. There are no vagrants
in Helena now and none in all the
section of the country contiguous to
the threatened area.
There were approximately 450 men
working on the levee at the threaten
ed point, and 140 more are held in
reserve here. They can be transport
ed to Old Town in motor trucks and
automobiles over a concrete road
within thirty-five or forty minutes
and the slightest sign of distress from
below will send them southward.
The slough recently increased the
length of the cave-in from fifty to
175 feet, but it was delayed suffi
ciently to allow completion of the
sand bag sub-levee on the inner edge
of the banquette and engineers in
charge believe they will be able to
prevent a crevasse if the stupendous
current at that point does not eat into
the banquette far enough to under
mine the sub-levee. It is not believed
that this will occur, although it is
one of the contingencies to be guard
ed against.

That’s the way a good many

they had secured in tea and coffee.
When they came to depend on it —
there was a hidden string, and
nothing left but disappointment.
