Final Figures Show
How Peach Lost. |
I
Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 21.—Final |
and complete returns on Peach
county were consolidated today;
in the state department. They!
show 29,842 votes for the pro
posed new county and 36,566
against it.
Fort Valley citizens who work
!ed for Peach county are under-
I stood to be planning to contest
the election if they can find a
way to do so. The law of Geor
gia prescribing the manner in;
which proposals to amend the |
constitution shall be voted on bv
the people makes no provision,
for a contest.
The proposed new state sena
torial district, to have been com-|
posed of Berrien, Brantley and
Cook, also was defeated, the v< t *
being 24,964 for and 27,080
against.

Signature of
Candlers Make Denial
Outstanding Charges.
Atlanta, Nov. 22.—General de-[
nial of the principal allegations
in the SIOO,OOO damage suit filed i
against him by Mrs. Clyde K. ;
Byfield, of Atlanta, in connection j
with an alleged occurence on the 1
steamship Bererrgaria, en route;
to Europe last summer, was made j
today by Walter T. Candler, in a 1
a special demurrer filed in De- j
Kalk County Superior Court.
The demurrer which also was |
an answer to the Byfield suit,
makes a sweeping denial that!
Mr. Candler had committed any j
wrong against Mrs. Byfield or is
liable for any damages and de
clared Mr. Candler did not per
suade the Byfields to accompany
him on the trip to Europe and
that “so far as he knew the
plaintiff and her husband werej
as anxious to make the trip as'
the defendant was.”
The suit against Candler was
filed last August following a suit
instituted by Mr. Candler against
Mr. Byfield charging blackmail.
Cartdler charged that blackmail
was used to coerce from hfm a
$22,500 note which was given to
Byfe d in Paris and on which he;
asked the court to stop payment. s
This suit still is pending, but has
been taken off the regular calen
dar.
