“The Greatest Work of a Great Author’*—That is
a Fitting* Description of the Sensational Novel of
Politics, Love and Intrigue
Mexico City, Feb. 24 -Ex-
President Madero and Suarez,
his vice president, were murder
ed in cold blood by the Mexican
government, according to. the
summary of the evidence gath-
today.
According to the story of a
Mexican newspaper man, \yho for
obvious reasons, desire his iden
tity to be unknow, Madero and
Suarez were not- shot ,,during a
scrimmage, bu$ were asjjasffiha,-
i'ed by rurates in the’rear of trie
penitentiary.
This man was-an eye witness
of the tragedy from a short dis
tance. Here is" his story;' 5 th6
ftetreaching-the outside world of;
the actual scene.at tho execution
the deposed president and
vic.e president;
“I followed the tracks of two
automobiles around tlie corner of
he penitentiary paralleling the
eastern wall. Right on the edge
of a shadow cast by the^briiliant
moon, half way down the. rear
wall there was a group of menand
t wo automobiles. It was about
.11:30 o’clock. The men were
running about. Finally they
.'fathered in one spot som dis
tance away from the automobiles,
i saw one man run to a car, take
out a lantern and rejoin the
roup. Then a rurale, with a
each body, one having the arms
the others the legs. The heads
of both victims hfung down al
most dragging upon the ground.
'‘In the moonlight I could see
the waxen and bearded features
of Madero smeared with blood.
His mouth was open and his eyes
in the tropical moonlight, had a
wild, staring expression. ’There
was no blood on Suarez’s face,
and I could not tell where he was
wounded. Suarez’s eyes were
tightly, closed.
"They putMadero’s body down
a momept to. .rest and I was very
near to il. ‘"His'white"siiirt was
smeared With blood Us though he
had been .wounded, in the chest,
His vest was‘torn and thesdldiers
had ripped it open in front, to feel
i f his. heart had stopped' boating.
'' I asked an officer, who came
up, how it had happened.' He
smiled in friendly greeting, ap-
pearently with no thought of the
tragedy in his mind, then said,
‘We were.nearly to jhe peniten
tiary when I heard, shouts. A
number of men ran toward our
party.
We thought it was an attempt at
rescue and shot at them. They
fired back. It was all fiver in a
few minutes. Madero and Suar
ez jumped into the street as soon
as the firing began and started
rifle in his had came running to- to run. Who shot him, .I do not
/ard me.
“What has’happened?” I asked
him. He slowed up a Jittle and
shouted, ‘Madero has been shot.’
Next an officer came running in
my direction, for I was still stand
ing by the corner. “Madero is
dead,” he called to me. Then
he continued. “There was a
fight; they tried to rescue himp
he was shot dead, and Suarez was
too. I asked him if I could proceed
“Go ahead; it’s all over now,” he
replied.
“As I walked ^forward saw
two prone bodies picked up from
the ground. Three men carried
know. The men who attacked
us finally.fled. We found Ma-.
dero and Suarez on the street,
both de.a'd.
‘ ‘The news was telephoned im
mediately to the national palace,
for when I passed there shortly
afterward the building was light
ed up and electric lights were
blazing. It was then 12:30 o’
clock. 1 stood in the street for a
while and saw several automo
biles drive past.” «
