BOYS AND GIRLS
The members of the Boys Corn
Club and the Girls Canning Club
will have their County contest
on Saturday, Get. llth at Cairo.
This date' whs decided on as be
ing the most suitable inasmuch
as it will be as late as can well
be arranged in order that the
prizes may be carried from this
county to the State Fair which
meets on October the 20th.
Every boy and girl in the coun
ty ought to be interested enough
in the work to come and bring
your prize, whether it is as good
as it should be or not. The poiftt
is to arouse a spirit of enthus
iasm and interest in the work,
and to keep it going. Some of
the boys and girls did not con
tinue the work until the end, but
all who did so and who are pre
pared to make v ~a report on the
work done should be present at
that time and show what* can be
done in Grady county.
There has been a prize offered
for the best showing made by
any district or association of
schools in the county. This
showing must be made by the
schools in the several districts
named below, and we give, them
in order that each school may
know just what district they
will be expected to exhibit with.
Let the schools of the each dis
trict get together on the day of
the fair and arrange their exhi
bits together.
First District.—Cairo, Tyus,
Cranford and Calvary schools
Second District.—Walker,
Chason, Golden Rod and Cuff
Head schools.
Third District.—Union,'Pine

The exact place for holding
the contest will be announced

Now that the schools are be
ginning to open up for the com
ing year’s work, the State Board
of Health desires to call the at
tention of the parents and the
teachers of the State to the im
portance of having the children
examined at the very outset for
the presence of hookworms, so
that those children who are in
fected may. be freed of the in
fection and therby enabled to do
their work properly, and also to
keep them from spreading the
disease to healthy children. The
Board will take pleasure in send
ing boxes, for sending speci
mens, to any school requesting
them. With each of these pack
ages there will be printed circu
lars giving detailed directions as
to how the specimen is to be col
lected so all the teachers will be
required to do is to distribute the
boxes among the pupils. In case
of an entire school or a large
number of students we will send
tins and reqnest that they be re
turned in quantities of from 10
to 50, by. express. Do not send
hem through the mail. If the
individual or teacher prefers a
regular mailing case will be sent.
Kindly let us know which you
wish. If the specimen, on ex
amination in the laboratory of
the Board, shows the presence of
hookworms or other intestinal
parasites a report stating the
type of worm will be mailed to
the sender, who can then show
the report to his or her physician
and be treated for. the disease.
The examination of a good many
schools has shown the entire en
rollment, including the teacher,
to be sufferers from some variety
of intestinal parasite-hookworm
being the most common infec
tion. A comparison of the marks
in school made by the infected
has shown that the non-infected,
as a rule, do much better work
and with less effort than those
who are suffering from those
health destroying parasites.
The State Board of Health also
wishes to respectfully direct the
attention of the trustees bf the
vorious schools to the importance
of providing the proper kind oi
closet at the schools. -It is of
more value to the children and to
the State to teach the children
decency, refinement and how to
take care of their health than
algebra, latin, geometry, or even
reading, writing and arithmetic.
The plans and specifications for
the construction of a sanitary
surface closet will be sent to the
trustees, or to anyone else in the
State, who will write for them.
