A Bostonian Slanders Georgia.
Prof. M. L. Brittain, state su
perintendent of schools, has de
clined to accept the appointment
of superintendent of the Atlanta
public schools, giving as his rea
sons that the state has more need
for his services the next two
years than has Atlanta.
Governor Slaton on Friday ap
pointed Hon. W. E. H. Searcy,
Jr., of Griffin, as Judge of the
Flint Circuit to succeed the late
Judge Robt. T. Daniel. Col.
Searcy is closely related to Mr.
W. H. Searcy, of this place and
the friends of this family are
highly elated over this appoint
tnent.
In Georgia—a supposedly civil
ized state—a negro, suspected of
stealing a ham fro ti a smoke
nouse and lodged in jail awaiting
trialiwas taken from the jail by
white men—they must have been
men, beasts would never been so
depraved—and shot to death

Our Dumb Animals. BostonMass,
The above is a slander of the
basest sort, and the author there
of must need be an animal, not
only dumb but also void of rea
son ana both deaf and blind,
there never has been such an oo
currence in Georgia, nor any
thing similar, on which such
statement may be based. There
are none so blind, deaf and
dumb as he who will wilfully
give publicity to such items,
common sense, reason and Amer
icanism is enough to convince
one that the above is a lie out of
the whole cloth. Shame on he
who would pose as the friend of
dumb animals ivnd vet publish
such a slander!
The matter of tick eradication
has been taken up by the Grady
County Live Stock Association
and a committee has been ap
pointed by Pres. Roddenberry
to go before the county commis
sioners and ask for an appropria
tion to defray the expense of the
work. Mr. Roddenberry estima
tes that the loss to Grady county
from this tick will average §50,
000 annually. Other nearby
counties have prepared dipping
vats and we hope our commis
sioners will do something to help
in eradicating this tick.

Guard Removed From
Gov. Slaton’s Home.
Atlanta, Ga.— June 29th.—Al
though the Atlanta papers have
wisely refrained from giving the
fact any local publicity, disgrace
ful though harmful scenes con
tinued to be enacted around the
home of Gov. Slaton as late as
Sunday night and not until Mori'
day wus the militia guard at his
home removed.
Although no one, by act or
statement, actually threatened
the retiring governor, pistols
were occasionally fired into the
air in the neighborhood and the
dwindling crowds used other
ways of publishing to the world
their displeasure at the Gover
nor’s decision in the L“o Frank
case.
