GRADYCOUNTY PROGRESS, CAIRO, GEORGIA.
WHAT DO YOU THINK
OF
FREIGHT RATE REVISION?
We have suggested to the Railroad Commis
sion of Georgia a system of revised rates for
intrastate commerce to conform with the sys
tem of rates for interstate commerce. The
hearing is set for August 17th.
The interests of the railroads and the inter
ests of the people are identical. If, in urging
our petition, we retard the development of
Georgia, we retard the development of the
railroads of Georgia.
You’ve thought about rate re- <
vision—does it affect your interest?
, Write us frankly just what *'
you think—what’s in your mind. ~ i
, Have we the wrong idea? If ^
so, in what respect?
If we think you have the wrong
idea, we’ll try to set you straight.
Remember we cannot prosper unless you
prosper. Your prosperity depends largely
upon good transportation service, hence the
community of interest.
We have told you the handicap under which'
we, and a large number of the smaller towns in
Georgia, are laboring. In asking you to write
to us we are not seeking praise. We seek ex
pression of your mature business opinion. \
We think rate revision which removes dis
crimination and enables the railroads to earn
sufficient to render first-class service and carry
forward their work of development, a good
thing. A revision on these lines cannot impose
a burden upon the business interests of Georgia
—which would be bad for both the people and
the railroads.
Interstate revision, removing many dis
criminations, took place January 1st, last, un
der requirement of the Interstate Commerce
Commission. We think discrimination of like
nature should be removed from intrastate ad
justments, also.
\ What do you think? Write today.
Your letter will be appreciated and receive
attention.
It is not and will not be the policy of the Railroads of
Georgia to propose any system of rates which would discrimi
nate unjustly against the Georgia producer in favor of pro
ducers located at points without the state. Should the prin
ciple appear to be violated by any technical construction of the
petition we give assurance that we will not propose, nor will
we attempt to adopt, in actual practice, any rate at variance
with the same.

Judge Hammond, of Augusta,
who spoke to the Press Association
Wednesday morning might well be
called an apostle of the oat. He
is a big brainy, earnest man who
has caught a vision of what good
farming in the south may accomp
lish, and sought to bring to the
weekly editors to whom he spoke
some realisation of the obligation
resting on them to spread the doc
trine of better farming. He docs
not believe the oat is the only crop
that should bo grown in the south,
but lie docs believe that it should
receive much more attention than
at present. We hope that the
Grady County Live Stock Associa
tion can arrange to have Judge
Hammond hero for an address al
sometime in the near future.

In the splendid address of Mr.
Chns. D. McKinney, of Docatur
on “Cei-operation of Home Pnpcrs
and Boards of Trade.” McKinney
paid his respects to the little one
horse board of trade that expends
its energy in trying to exploit to
the world that the Greatur Creator
has given its town a delightful at-
mospher, and and just splendid
water. These are good things to
be thankful for, but as God in His
bountifulncss has given all the
neighboring towns about the same
brand of these necessary blessings,
it leaves a live board of trade
with a much larger work than to
try to convince the world that they
have a monopoly of these. He
said the real business of a good
board of trade is to be community
builders, and that in this work
their indispensible allies are the
home papers.
Col. Emmett Houser and the
Peach county folks were not a bit
“stingy” with those luscious
peaches at Decatur. Here is hop
ing that these good people will win
in their fight for the new county of
Peach, with beautiful Fort Vnllcy
as the county seat.
The almost unanimous opinion
among the newspaper men at the
Decatur meeting was that news
papers should advance not only
their advertising rates but also
their subscripts rates. Quite a
number of the weeklies had already
advanced their prices to $1.50 per
year, and we note that some others
have advanced to that price since
returning from the meeting. It is
true that in few lines of business
has there been such a decided ad
vance in the price of raw materials
as ip the printing business.
It is right hard even in a body
of nc wspaper men to gain a very
clear idea of the present guberna
torial situation in Georgia. It
seemed to be true that a majority
of the press as represented at De
catur were for Dr. Hardman,
probably with Harris as their
second choice. A general senti
ment existed that Hugh Dorsey
Dorsey would lead in the popular
vote just at this time. It is our
own opinion that the sober seoond
thought of the voters arc turning
more and more to' either Governor
Harris or to Dr. Hardman, and
that the vote on election day will
show the disapproval of ring poli
tics as represented in Hugh Dorsey
and Joe Pottle. Georgia surely
csuld do no wiser thing than to re
elect her present governor.
Atlanta folks are interested in
the Cnpital removal question. It
is no longer considered the idle
joke that they for a long time pro
fessed to belieue it. Of course they
still believo that it is a foolish
thing to undertake and that At
lanta can surely succeed in keep
ing the Capitol as one of their side
street attractions
The sentiment sutside of Atlanta
though is rapidly growing in favor
of the removal, and it is very safe
to predict that if Macon does not
secure the Capital sooner or later,
Atlanta will have to put up some
tall fight.
