Manufacturing Serum
Along the line of successful hog
raising, the Moultrie Chamber of
Commerce has furnished innocula-
ti m cutfits free to every district in
Colquit county, and issued the fol
lowing bulletin:—
“The very grentest drawback' to
the successful raising of hogs is the
much dreaded and very destructive
cholera. The breeders need to
realize Grst of all that the most
searching scientific investigation
has failed to find any real cure for
this disease, once the hog gets

practice and recommend this, but
the breeders are too loth to spend
a little mouey for this protection
and so often wait until the hogs
are actually dying before they do
anything and then what they do is
unsatisfactory, because so many of
the infected hogs die after treat
ment.
When the Moultrie Packing Co.,
was organized, the promoters real
ized that the success of their enter
prise, would depend largely upon
the control of this . disease. Not
connected with the packing plant,
butconfident with it, Dr. H. H.
Rothe, recognized throughout the
state as a very immenent Bacter
iologist, having organized and oper
ated the first plant for the manu
facture of hog cholera serum in the
South, in connection with the State
College of Agriculture at Athens,
and having taught in that Institu
tion for four years, was induced to
come to Moultrie and having asso
ciated Mr. J. B. Carlton with him
self, they established the Georgia
Serum Laboratory at Moultrie Ga.
They offered their first product
to the public on March 1st. 1916,
since which time they have en
larged their plnnt and increased
their output until now they can
supply practically all demands.
Parties who have used this product
p:onounce it first-class in every

work immediately to repair any
damage done by disease or hurt.
If these forces succeed in building
faster than the disease effects tear-

he dies. The effect of serum is to
help the upbuilding forces. How
to get this serum?

natural ability to overcome the
cholera effection. This is called
the “double” or “simultaneous”
treatment. If hq„ gets well his
system is charged time and again
with this overcoming treatmens
until he is so full of it, that it it
impossible to give him cholera.
Then at certain intervals his
blood is drawn, (from the end of
his tail) untjl he has given up all
his life’s blood This is taken into
the laboratory and manufactured

This serum must yet be tested
to see if it is effective. A litter of
pigs is secured and„ part of them
treated with this serum. Then all

Grady County
and Her Farmers
This scribe made a trip a few
days ago through six south Geor
gia counties, H alving a < loso obser
vance of the crops along the high
ways we traveled.
We are not saying it in a boast
ful spirit, but, \vc> are proud to
make the statement that Giady
has them all “skint” on farming.
VVe have only caught a faint vis
ion of the possibilities of Grady aF
an agricultural county. With the
rapid rise in price of all farm pro
ducts, is there q field that offers
S'ester opportunity to the younp
•nun of ambition than the field
agriculture?
We know by observation that
there is not, a section in all the
grand old Southland of ours, more
blessed b y nature than Gradj
county. The home of the juicy
sugar cane, the velvet bean, tin
peanut, and the pure bred hog.
While Grady’s fanners are mnkinp
progress in i griculture there arc
many things that need to be done
to develop her resources agricultur
ally. One of the great hindorance;
as wo see it, is the pine stump,
which is nothing more than a loafer
in your field—they produce noth
ing but occupy a space that would
grow crops, if they were removed.
On the average pine lands in
south Georgia the stump takes up
one-fourth to one-sixth of our culti
vation. On some of our fields we
have made a calculation which
showed one-fourth of the land was
occupied by the stump, growing
grass and weeds around them,
furnishing a harboring place for
field rets and insects to hibernate
in through winter.
The most essential thing in crop
production is a deep broken, well
prepared seed bed. It is impos
sible to make this preparation
where stumps and trees are stand
ing in the field. Organic matter
plowed in the soil, a systematic
crop rotation with a well prepared
deep broken seed bed will reveal to
us the most wonderfully productive
soil in nil the sunny south.
We cannot impress this fact up
on our farmers too forcibly. Vege
table matter turned in the soil,
winter cover crops to supply winter
grazing for live stock and prevent
erosion of the soil with a systematic
crop rotation will build a perma
nent soil fertility and keep Grady
in the lend as a farming county.
