Talks on Thrift
There lire two mediums that
muke it easy to sfieiul money with
out a pricking conscience. The
first is the charge account, and the
other is the checking uecount. All
large stores have made it a steady
policy to encourage the opening of
charge accounts,' being liberal in
their rules us to the credit risk. A
man need have hut a few good ref
erences and cheek up well to he
honored with a place on the hooks
of the house, where he may buy up
to a certain limit, have it charged,
receive his hill monthly and pay
within a reasonable time, which
should ho two weeks. There are
ohviovs advantages in this feature
of modern business, and the depart
ment stores are constantly itnpor
taning jcaple to avail themselves
of such facilities. But beware of
this alluring bait. It tempts you
to over-hny, purchi s'ng the tilings
you do not need, perlinps, and
would not buy if you had to pay
cash.
Human nature is nlike every
where.” We all succomb to such
temptations. The charge account
does faciliutc shopping, for you do
net have to wait for change, may
return goods with ease and have a
go. We missed it. In the sight of
real money there is sotrcJiing
subtle and precious, and we let go
with regret. To all healthy and
normal individuals uncorrupted by
the possession of “easy money,” or
superfluous wealth, or over indul
gence in alcohol, the parting with
real money is painful. As the crisp
hill leaves your hand a ghaastly
little sigh accompanies it. You
have then tangibly purled with
your money. The fruits of your
labor uro gone.
The insidious side of the check
ing account is that it enables you
to spend money without ptickirg
of conscience. You write your
check in a moment and hand it
over as so mueh money; hut it
lacks the sting of :p tiding rial
money.
Beware how you Ic't the charge
account run awuy wi*h your good
judgment. Keep yourself in cluck.
By all means have a hank account
if you spend I ut a hundred ddlurs
a month, hut beware lest the temp
tation to draw cheeks gets you i to
the habit of tscating money in the
bank ns different from money in
your purse, hi cause all you have to
Tlo is to fill out a check.
A hank account for household
expenses is ti e best thing yet de
vised, hut it has its temptations.
Consider ycur cheek hook us a
record to tell you whore your
money went, who got it, for what
purposes, and he your best receip 1 ,
i r „i,„, i ! hut look out for the allurement of
record o f wlmt you buy ^ | the checking account that it docs
month. Use it, but do not abuse no j. beguile you into reckless spend-
it. ing that you would not fall prey to
if you lived on a cash basis. When
you live by real money you may
have a little fit at every unwise
expenditure, hut in a cheeking ac
count, or a charge account you
have one big fit at the end of the
month. You aught not to have
either.
The second medium is the check
ing account in a bank. Like the
charge account it makcB spending
easy. There was a time when we
lived on a casli basis. We paid for
wnat wc got when we got it in
money. We could see the money
