Senator McLaurin, of Mississippi, De
notfloos Ne vspapdr Paragraph as
Oiitrageaus ani Malignant.
I
Washington special says: Mr.
^ took the
JicLaurin, of. Mississippi, i
in the senate Saturday to make
floor id
Fers onal explanation regarding tne
a saying that the
paper paragraph,
authorities of indianola, Miss., are
engaged in arresting people for sell
h otographs of President Roose- i
ing P Bocker T. Washington din
velt and Mr. !
together. Ordinarily, said
ing of this character
jicLaurin, a story
may not be worth attention, but un
der the circumstances he felt he
should refer to it for the purpose ol
refuting it, as it is entirely without
foundation. which dated
Yhe paragraph, was
New Orleans, March 10, follows:
“Enraged at President Roosevelt’s
refusal to remove Minnie Cox, posc
D Istress of the Indianola, Miss., post
office, Sheriff Anderson, of that place,
today arrested S- and Frank Davidson,
of Chicago, for peddling photographs
showing Mr. Roosevelt and Booker
Washington dining a<- the same table.
The sheriff classified the photos as
obscene matter and prejudicial to the
dignity of the south, and to show the
president that Indianola citizens will
not tolerate any person circulating
likenesses of himself on a social
equality with the negro educator.
“Groups of indignant citizens gath
ered at the Indianola jail, urging se
vere punishment for the Chicagoans
for violating the obscene literature
Jar. No other pictures considered
vulgar by the sheriff were found, but
lie men were not released. Sheriff
Anderson has detailed a force of depu
ties to scour the surrounding country
searching for other pictures the ped
dlers are said to have sold, in which
the race problem figured.”
Mr. McLaurin said the paragraph
had grown out of a statement made
in a newspaper letter written by A.
0. Paxton, an attorney of Leland,
Miss., who told *f the arrest at that
point of three men who, he said,
were engaged in selling pictures ot
the president and Washington seated
at table together and also pictures of
an obscene character. These pictures,
he said, appealed strongly to race
Similar arrests also, Mr. McLaurin
had been made in Indianola, and
was found on hearing of tlie case
a Cincinnati concern engaged in
the pictures in question
many agents out in the interest
these works.
The men were tried and some ot
them sent out of the county and Mr.
McLaurin expressed surprise that any
should have permitted
-to be tried. He said the penalty
imposed by the law was entirely too
inadequate and expressed the opinion
that the death penalty would not oe
too severe. He added that the ar
rests were not because the men were
filing photographs of the president
or of Washington, but because they
"ere selling lewd pictures. Mr. For
aker said he never had heard of the
Cincinnati firm mentioned as respon
sible for [• Ih e purpose of the pictures.
