Cairo, Thomas County, Georgia, December 16, 1904.
(Special Dispatch to The Journal.)
Whigham, Ga., Lee j.—There
is great enthusiasm over this
section now on the new county
question. Cairo has had two
important meetings and the
citizens of that town are using
every energy for the new
county.
At the past meeting, held
Wednesday, the 4th, Cairo pass
ed a resolution that Whigham
should have a division of the
city court of ihe new county,
embracing the territory west
of Big Tired Creek, and that
Cairo should have the remain
ing territory in her division of
the city court. With the above
resolution adopted Whigham
will co-operate to a large extent
with Cairo in the move and
agree for the latter to have the
county seat.
The new county will extend
on east to Barnet’s creek; on
south to Florida, on west to lot
15, three and a half miles west
of Whigham, and on north to
Mitchell county, taking in the
richest portions of Thomas and
Decature counties. Committees
have been appointed to draft
petitions to circulate over the
territory and they will begin to
be circulated at an early date.
There is a committee of en
thusiastic citizens of this terri
tory at work and there is little
doubt but at the proper time a
new county will be formed.
The new county will probably
be named Maxwell, on account
of the fact of the v^ry large
number of citizens in the ter
ritory by that name. The Max
wells were about the first set
tlers in this territory. They
are a class of energetic and
honest citizens and this is the
largest family by one name of
any other family in the county,
so the christening committee
will probably settle on Maxwell
as the name for the new county.
Wight is also a probable
name of the new county.
The citizens taking the fore
most lead in the new county
movement are Colonel J. B.
Singletary, Colonel R. R. Ter
rell, Hon. W. B. Roddenbery
and Henry Wight and Dr. W.
A. Walker. There are others
also lending a helping hand, but
the above seem to be foremost
in the movement and are not
leaving a chip unturned that
would help the cause.

Cupid is the hearts of a good many of
our young people around here, as there
are from two or three marriages a Week,
and still there is to be another before the
holidays are over.
It could be said that Judge Pope was
Cupid’s King because he holds the record
for uniting more loving “loving hearts”
during the last two months than any
other three Justices combined in this
county. On last Monday between 9 and
half past 10 o’clock, he married three
couples, two of them was married at the
Pope residence The first was Miss Ber
tha Wilcox to Mr Perose Smith. Miss
Wilcox is one of Thomas countys most
beautiful young ladies, while the groom
is a model young man. The second cou
ple was Miss Mamie E Drew to Mr Ira
Carlisle. Miss Drew is the youngest
daughter of W M Drew and is highly ac
complished, while the groom is one of our
best farmers. Their marriage was a sup
prise to every one except two or three of
their friends who knew of their approach
ing marriage. Just after the ceremony the
bridal party drove over to the residence
of W L Ragans where his oldest daugh
ter, Miss Pearl Louise was married to Mr
G Prior Rich. Their attendants were
Misses Yona Griner and Lucie Ragans,
Messrs Kedar Bennett and Robert Stand
land. A selection of Loengrieu was beau
tifully rendered by Miss Charity Adams,
a cousin of the bride. Just after this cer
emony they all attended services at Pine
Forest, where Rev M M Kinclien preach
ed a most excellent sermon. There were
fifty guests invited to partake of a boun
ttful dinner at the home of Mr Ragans;
there was plenty for . everyone
some to spare- At six o’clock there
was a suinptious collation served at
home of Rev Smith in honor of the bride.
There was also a big dinner at the
