FERRAR FENTON'S TRANSLATION , 1 a u OF nr THE Tor
join sno in mill siom.
R.ev. H. Stiles Bradley of
Trinity Methodist Church of
Atlanta, called attention Sun
day to Ferrer Fenton’s version
of the Jonah and the whale
story as translated from the
Hebrew. According to Ferrar
Fenton, who is rega on of
the most learned of Biblio
al scholars and translators.
Jonah was not swallowed by a
whale when cast overboard by
sailors; as recorded m the ac
cepted translation ol the Book
of Jonah, Ferrar Fenton finds
in the original Hebrew that
Jonah was three days and three
nights in the hold of a ship
named “The Great Fish ”
According to his translation
Jonah did not rest in the belly
of a fish, a “whale,” but was
picked up by “The Freat Fish.”
During the course of his ser
mon, Rev. Mr. Bradley called
the attention of his congrega
tion to this new version. Dr.
* Bradley made no comment on it
It was merely as a matter of in
formation for his hearers that
he read this remarkable transla
tion by Ferrer Fenton.
in a foot note relative to the
difference between the old trans
lation and the new Ferrar Fen
ton says;
“Great Fish,” was the name
of the ship mistranslated“whale”
in the. version of the Greek
translators, whose blunder has
been repeated by all subsequent
tronslators, in all languages, to
the perplexity of their readers,
until I decided to go back to
the original of the prophet in
his own Hebrew.

George McCarren, a farmer
living near this city, has just,
received a much prized little
aluminum plate marked as fol
lows: “Return to George Mc
Carren, Orrville, O.,” with which
an interesting story is connect
ed.
George McCarren, Sr., father
of the man who received the
little billet of aluminum, was
an eccentric naturalist, and
spent much time in the study
of birds and insects. During
McCarren’s youth, about twenty
years ago, he says he remem
bers being told by h;s father
the elder McCarren, of a dispute
the latter had had with a fellow
naturalist of Akron, O., as to
the age to be attained by a com
mon crow and finally to settle
the matter McCarren attached
an aluminum tag to a crow cap
tured in the fields and sent the
bird forth with the plate secure
ly fastened to its neck by wires.
The legend on the plate request
ed the finder to return it to Me
Carren in case anything should
happen to the bird.
As McCarren, Jr., remembers
it, the two men made a bet as
to whether the plate would be
returned within twenty years.
If the crow were killed or died
they counted on the little billet
being found and returned to
the address on the plate. If
this were not returned they be
lieved it would be sufficient
evidence that the bird would be
still alive. McCarren bet that
the plate would not be returned
within that time; hence he won
the bet. The crow was shot by
a farmer boy named Angers in
Holmes county last week, and
the billet returned to the son of
the bettor, the older McCarren
having died before he could
realize the proceeds and the
satisfaction of winning his wa

Christmas time is the Home
Mission worker’s opportunity.
On the blessed morning of the
I birthday of the Christ-child, let
us be prepared to remember
others in a way that will mark
! the spirit of peace and good
will. Remember we all, the
| rich and the poor, the lowly and
the proud,are members of one
great family. The least fortu
nate among us still have some
thing to give a bright greeting,
a word of cheer, a whisper of
appreciation for kindness receiv
ed. To those who are able to
share a goodly store, comes the
sweet privilege of making little
children glad, and infusing
warmth into lonely and neglect
ed lives.
We append below a little
statement of some of the Home
Mission Work.
A Capital of Five Cents.
In April, 1902 , quite a num
ber of women promised to in
vest five cents for the benefit
of our missionary society and
work with it as capital for one
year. The next ensuing year,
I at our March praise meeting,
1 the results were brought in,
j amounting to about ninety-five
[dollars, the largest sum being
I from our pastor’s wife—over
thirteen dollars earned in mak
ing sweeping caps from hand
kerchiefs. One member earned
ten dollars making tatting from
a spool of thread, Some made
bread, cake, etc. One raised
flowers from five cents’ .worth
of seeds. Many other Ways
were sought, but all were le
quired to make it a business
transaction beginning with five
cents. So successful was the
outcome that many more are
going into it this year, and it
creates a great deal of worthy
emulation. I think the more
work a society can be induced
to do the better and more alive
it will be. Our gifts were in
creased one hundred dollars
over the previous year. We
hold our meetings at the homes
of the members, having a social
hour, with simple refreshments
at the close. Sometime during
the latter part of the year we
hold a public annual meeting,
taking the place of the regular
Sunday evening service. The
ladies furnish the entire pro
gramme and have the collection.

RECTOR OF ST. LUKE’S.
Ashburnham, Ontario, Testifies
To The Good Qualities of
Chamberlain’s Cough
Remedy.
Ashburnham, Out., April 18.
1908.—I think it is only right
tell you what wonderful effect
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy has
produced. The day before Easter
I was so distressed with a cold and
cough that I did not think to be
able to take any duties the next
day, as my voice was almost chok
ed by the cough. The same day I
received an order from you for a
bottle of your ouge Remedy. I
at once procured a sample bottle,
and took about three doses of the
medicine. To my great relief the
cough and cold had completely
disappeared and I was able to
preach three times on Easter Day.
I knew that this rapid and effec
tive cure was due to your ough
Remedy. I make this testimo
nial without solicitation, being
thankful to have found such a
Godsent remedy.
Respectfully Langfejdt, yours,
E. A. M. A.,
Rector of St. Luke’s Church,
