Asheville, N. C.—Belief that Maj.
Samuel H. McLeary, army officer who
disapp.ared after having been seen at
Raleigh July 2, has met with foul
play, is expressed by police authori¬
ties. It has been reported that an
army cap was found in his abandoned
automobile near Canton, N. C., blood
spattered. This belief is strengthen¬
ed by the report that a resident of
Thickety, a settlement near Canton,
that two men in an automobile had
him for water to wash their
and had stated that they were
trouble with the car. This man
later found the automobile abandon-:d
reported it to the Canton author¬

Raleigh, N. C., when he stopped over
a few hours on his way from Nor¬
Va., to Fort Moultrie, S. C., near
