Somk time in January tbe publishers of
tbe New York Lay Book sent a proposition
to their agent at this place to the effect that
if he would secure forty subscribers at fifty
cents each they would send the paper one
year. Tempted by tbe extreme low price,
between forty and fifty of our best citixens
paid over the subscription money and ordered
the paper sent to their address. It came
regularly for abont three months, since
which time not a single copy has been re
ceived, nor has any explanation been made
concerning the delinquency. The subscribers
are justly indignant, and denounce the whole
concern as a downright swindle. The tact
has been demonstrated time and again that
a weekly newspaper cannot be printed at
surh small cost, much less afford a living to
the publisher ; and just so long as our people
patronize these penny publications they may
expect to be swindled.

PLEASE give me your attention while I

full of interest, if economy forms any part ol
tbe new leaf you have pledged yourself to
turn over at the beginning of the year, 1
will begio by tailing ypu (tboqgb it is hardly
neocssary,) that tbe country has resumed
specie payments, and that it will materially
change tbe monied valuea of all article! of
merchandise, (t is bound to bring every,
thing down to wbat is called SOLID RUCK
BOTTOM. I will add in this connection
that I have in store aod shall ba constantly
receiving, at intervals to suit tbe seasons, a
superior line of goods, comprising ail articles
urually kept m a Dry (foods and Grocery
Store, and if you are a lover of Nioe Goods

Because resumption placed gold at par,
you must not get it into your bead that 1 ain

gold, silver or greenbacks are alike to me.
I take any legal money that is ofiered, and

Is the latest nut and the best, the inventers
having obtained the three first patents in 1974
and the three last in 1877, tbe dates of which
are stamped on tbe throat plate. Examine
the different makes of machines for yourselves,
aod don’t tuke any one’s word aa te which are
new inventions.
The inventors are free to admit that asaay
of the old patent sewing machines have their
particular good points, and after a careful ex
amination of them all they have selected the
best principles from them and embodied 'hem
with their own new patents, thus producing a
machine that excels the eld patents in maoy
respects.

give buyers tbe benefit of the peddling agents’
