Tribute of* Respect.
Whereas, The sad intelligence has
reached us, through the Public Press,
of the death of our former School-mate
and friend, Mr. Henry G. Patterson
while sojourning in the Philippines.
Therefore be it Resolved, That words
fail to express our deep greif and irre
parable loss in the death of our most
estimable and noble hearted Christian
friend.
Resolved 2d, That while he was one
of our Dumber, by his mauly, open
spirit, his warm-hearted disposition, and
faithfulness to every duty, he eudeared
himself to both teachers and pupils
alike.
Resolved 3d, That he but illustrated
the qualities of an uuselfish spirit in
his death at his post of duty in the
army, always bearing himself nobly un
der the most trying conditions of a
malarial and disease stricken country.
Resolved 4th, That, while he sleeps
the sleep that knows no waking in his
lonely .home beyond the sea, yet the
tendrils of our love are reaching out
toward him in bis silent slumbers of
the last long sleep.
Resolved stb, That a copy of these
resolutions be furnished the family of

With It Recommendation
Of* Mercy.
Quite a large crowd was present last
Monday morning when Superior Court
reconvened to take up the criminal

The number of murder cases were
the source of attraction. However the
case of T. J. McKibben vs. Andy
Kimbell, charging arson, aroused con

all day Monday, resulting in acquittal
for the defendant.
The McCord case, upon which chief
interest was centered, and the history
of which is already familiar to ihe peo
pie of Henry, was then taken up. It
was closely and ably contested by both
sides, going to the jury after six oclock
Tuesday night, and when court con
vened Wednesday morning they re
burned a verdict of guilty, with recom
mendation for me r cv. Judge Reagan
then passed sentence for life. Hon.
Robert L. Berner, Judge W. A. Brown
and Col. E. M. Smith represented tbe
defense, and Solicitor Bloodworth and
Csf. J. F. Wall the prosecution. An
appeal for new trial has been made.
The case of one of the three negroes
charged with the killing of Gray at Lo
cust Grove, was begun yesterday mor
ning, aud is in progress as we go to

The case of Pomie Jones charged
with killing Joel Kimpson at Hampton

A good many miuor cases have been
disposed of, aud there are others yet
