Our present legislature seems to be
a gay s» t. One fellow blew out the
gas at bis boarding house, another tri- d
to light his cigar on au iucadescent
light, some junketing at the State Fair,
others are taking in the Midway sights
at Columbus, aud a pair of them tried
to cut each other iuto mince meat on

New York, Nov. 7 —Richard Cro
ker said at the Demooatic Club to
day :
‘T was very much surprised and dis
appointed at tbe way tbe election turn
ed out. I did expect Mr. Bryan to be
elected president of the United States.”
Asked for the cause of tbe defeat,
Mr. Croker replied :
*‘l believe that 16 to 1 had a good
deal to do with the vote against Bryan
in this state. Wbat the causes were
in the Southern and Western states I
do not kuow.
“We all kuow what the cause was in
New \ r ork state —the money center of
the east. However, New York City
did very well iudeed. If the rest of
the country had done as well as New
\ r ork, Bryan would have been elected.
Kings county did very well, too.
“I do not regard the decision of the
country as adverse to Mr. BryaD as a
man. It is against the principles. He
is a magnificent representative Ameri
can.”
To Ntand Drouth.
Land to stand drouth well should be
deeply broken during winter. Unless
this is done the rains fall on a compact
surface and How off through the fur
rows, ditches, ravines, creeks and riv
ers, iustead of saturating the soil for
the benefit of future crops. This deep
winter plowing is more essential"* for
corn than any other staple. For fall
sown grain this deep plowing must be
doue earlier, but it serves the same
purpose—it is ready to receive the rains
as they fall, and once well saturated
will staud a severe drouth.—Farm aud

A dispa'ch fr<'m Savannah says:
With a view of determining whether
Lwer freight rates can be granted to
shippers of seed cotton, President John
M. Egan, of the Central of Georgia
Railway Compauy, aud Mr. C. C.
Hanson, who has charge of the com
pany’s compresses, have just concluded
the experiment of attempting to burn a
carload of seed cottou. They first tried
it with a cigar but tbe cotton put the
cigar out. Tbeu a match was applied,
but only tbe top surface of the lint was
burned off, after which the fire went
out. A second time the torch was ap
pl’ed, with the same result—h 9 seed
cottou iu bulk simply refusing to be
burned.
Mr. Egau will make a repoit of tbe
test to the Southeastern Freight Asso
ciation, which has tbe petitiou of tbe
shippers before it. This is the second
test that has been made, the first hav
ing been conducted in Alabama.
McKinley is elected but his triumph
will not clobo our stores nor stop the
wheels of iudustry. Periods of pros
parity will come and go regardless of
the man who occupies the White House.
He, of course, exercises au influence
that either impedes or impels onward,
but that influence is Dot great enough
to stem the tide created by natural cir
cumstances and business push. It can
not raise the price of cottou wheu a
big surplus is produced; it cauuot lower
the price when there is a big shortage.
Hence there is no need of defeated
partisans becoming sore and disconso
late. We are going to live; we are
going to have plenty to eat and to
wear and those of us who put forth
great euergy and exercise good judg
ment with it v are going to succeed well.
Let us accept the situation cheerfully
aud bend our efforts to the advance
ment of our community, our state and
our nation.-~Douglasville New South.
