CHANGE IN THE ENTERPRISE MANAGEMENT
A WORD IN PARTING.
My connection with The Enter¬
prise was severed on October 24th
this year and this is my announce
ment of retirement as editor of
the paper.
I have sold tny interest to Mr.
C. R. Hawk, of I am pa, Fla., who
will continue uninterruptedly what
I now relinquish. He will collect
all subsciiptions due the paper
and for all ads running in this is
sue. Mr. Hawk is an experienced
newspaperman and we feel sure
that he will give the people of
dear old Newton county the paper
which they deserve. To the great¬
est possible extent of my own best
wishes follow him as tm assumes
his duties as editor of The Enter¬
prise.
It is not without a tinge of sad¬
ness that I say good bye. Eigh¬
teen years of continued association
with The Enterprise and its work¬
ing force has been a very pleasant
vocation. For one year as editor
and manager of the paper I have
put forth my best efforts to give
the people of the county the paper
which I believed they should have.
I have tried to stand for the right
regardless of business or the opin
ions of others. This I shall ever
try to do. Others may not see
the right as 1 have seen it, and I
only* acted as my conscience dicta
ted in all things. I love the paper
and the work and for none other
than a better future would I have
severed my connection at this time.
I appreciate very much the
words of encouragement
confidence which have been
^pokoo to me by my friends I (
apprec, ate lhe support wh ‘ chl!
have received from the business
men of the city and county. I
have come to know men better
and love them more by reason of
my having spent years of my life
in the newspaper business here.
However, I feel that with only
two more months to run the paper
it is better for me to turn loose
now. It is the prompting of my I
better judgment, although not the
inclipation of my heart.
My future plans'arenot yet made,
If the futurft may bear nie away
from that flnd thos „ ! loV e ( my
heart will still be here among the
sacred memories and the indissol¬
uble ties which bind me to my
home.

FOR TWO MORE NEW STEEL
RIVER BRIDGES
SHARP BIDDING FOR
These Two Good Contracts from
the County and Good Price
Was Thereby Secured.
At a special meeting held last
Monday the County Commission
ers ^ the contract for the erection
°f f wo new steel bridges, both
across the Alcovy river.
At a recent meeting of the com
missioners it was determined to
tear away the old wooden structure
across the river, one.known as Me
Guirt’s bridge and the other as the
Railroad bridge,
A number of steel bridge con¬
structors were notified of this
decision and plans were submitted
by several of them and at the
regular meeting this month plans
for both of the bridges were adopt¬
ed and bids asked for and on Mon¬
day the commissioners met and
opened these bids and let the con¬
tract.
A number of bids were made
and several gentlemen representing
the different concerns were present
in person to look after their inter
eats.
Examination of the bids develop¬
ed the fact that Auktin Bros., of
Atlanta were the lowest and best
bidders, their bid being several
hundred dollars lower than the
next lowest bidder, and the con¬
tract was let to them accordingly.
The price foi both steel struct¬
ures complete was $8,072, and ac¬
cording »o the contract both brid¬
ges arc to 06 completed and turn¬
ed over to the couuty by January
10 1909.
Austin Bros, have done consider¬
able steel bridge work for Newton
county and they have always made
good in every way in their work.
As is known the present board
of Commissioners is composed of
J. Z. Johnson, chairman, and Wm.
Boyd and C. R. Rogers, but aftei
the end of the present year, under
the new law Messrs. J. T. Gibson
and E. L. Almand will be added
to the membership of the tvard.
As the letting of the contract for
these new bridges were of interest
to the whole county and invjlve
the Board for next year to some
extent, the presant board invited
the two gentlemen who will be ad
ded to the board next year, to be
present at the last regular meet¬
ing and at the called meeting and
consulted with them in regard to
the new bridges.
This spirit of the old board is a
broad and liberal one and will be
appreciated by the people through¬
out the whole countv.

A WORD IN BEGINNING.
As will be seen from the accom
paoying article Mr. L. L. Flowers
has severed his connection with
1 he Enterprise and the uudersign
ed has assumed charge of the paper.
Having recently purchased the
plant from the administrators of
the Cooley estate an arrangement
was entered into with Mr. Flowers
whereby possession has been se
cured at this time instead of Jan.
1st as was originally intended.
In casting my lot with Coving
°u an its good people and the
splendid type of citizenry of which
. ewton county is composed it is
w it p.ensure and confidence
the future is contemplated. It
could not be otherwise in a com¬
munity composed of such splendid
people as are lound in Covington
and Newton county.
This city and county readily ap¬
peals to one seeking a home in a
substantial and progressive com¬
munity, Under its new manage¬
ment it will he the firm purpose of
The Enterprise to lend its every ef¬
fort and energy to the upbuilding
of the community and advertising
to home-seekers the many advan¬
tages possessed by Covington and.
Newton county. In this work the
earnest and substantial support of
the business, industrial and agri¬
cultural interests are invoked in
return for such loyal service as a
progressive and conservative paper
give.
The Enterprise will always ad¬
vocate the right and condemn in
deserving measure; advocate good
and progressive government and
the tuaintamauce of organized
Democracy.
The support and couusel of all
citizens is invited in this un¬
dertaking and with the practical
experience of many years in the
newspaper business the writer will
only such suppo't and en
couragemrnt as results may merit.
The kind words of Mr. Flowers
are genuinely appreciated and The
Enterprise as well as the people of
Covington and Newton county
part from him with sincere regret
and wish for him success in his
undertakings.
Chas. R. Hawk.
By Way of Introduction.
As announced elsewhere Mr. C.
R. Hawk, of Tampa, Fla., with
this issue, takes charge of The
Enterprise.
Mr. Hawk has had more than
^ wen jy y ear g successful experience
in newspaper work.
He was for years staff corres
pendent for t.he Jacksonville
Times-Union and in the Spanish
American war served the Associa
ted Press. As managing editor of
Tampa Daily Herald for four years
and of the Tampa Daily Times
for two years, Mr. Hawk enjoys
a high standing as an aggressive
and wide-awake newspaper man.
He enters into the Work here
wuhtbe ability and determina
tion not only to maintain the pres
tige a ready ac qui red by The En
terprise, hut to make the paper
even a still greater factor in every
thing that tends to advance the
county's interests J
As the brother-in-law of Hon.
Z. Johnson, of Oxford, Mr. Hawk
by no means comes to the county
a-> an absolute stranger.
We bespeak for the new tdiior :t
cordial welcome and a hearty sup
port in his new work.
