ON JOINING THE CHURCH
Personal goodness docs not qali
fv us for joining the church of
Christ. A man must have hotter,
more enduring claims than that if
lie would be received into the
church as a worthy associate of
other church members. Yet some
good people are actually remain¬
ing outside the church today be¬
cause they hold to the mistaken
notion that goodness is the test of
membership.
A young man who gives freely
to church work, but who refuses
to connect himsHf with the
church that he largely supports,
said the other day that he had
4 » never seen the time yet when he
was good enough to join the
■church. > 1 He never will. N >r
has he ever seen the time when
an'’ one else lie knows was good
enough to join the church. If
indeed, he thought he had attain¬
ed to that standard of g< odness,
what assurance would he have
that tomorrow he would continue
to hold it? Tie misses the tact
that his present conviction of per¬
sonal unworthiness is his first
•qualification for church member¬
ship. The nex question is wheth-
6 t ecbeliev-s that Jesus Christ is
able to save that which was lost.
Il he does, then his only rational
ai d honorable course is to give
himself unconditionally and pub¬
licly into the keeping of that Sa¬
viour. Tliis is’joiuing the church.’
The church is no a collection of
4 v good” people; till less a collec¬
tion of people who think they are
good. It is a body of persons who
know that hey are, in and of
tlieuiselves. hopelessly evil, : nd
who because of this conviction
have thrown themselves into the
love and mmey of tin omnipotent
Saviour, knowing that their only
hope for salvation and halfway de
cency lies in him. They find
comfort and strength in banding
themselves together in the name
of then common Saviour. Is it be
cause one counts himself beneath
these persons or above them, that
he will not join the church?—Sun
day Schopl Times.
There has been organized a youn c
men’s prayer meeting and ttie first sess' 1 n
was held at the Methodist church of Cov
ingten on last Sunday afternoon, with
about twenty-five presen*. The meeting
was presided #ver by Mt. It. P. Lester,
and the object is the deepening of the
spiritual life of men. and the sdvation
souls. The talks all had the right ring
and we expect great power from the move
ment. The next meeting will be held
with the Baptist church on next Sunday
afternoon at three o’clock. It is entirely
undenominational, and all men are invit¬
ed. It would seem superfluous to say
all of our Baptist yo ng men should attend
the session at our church- lir. G. T.
