PCES students build farming and pollinating garden
Pike County Elemen
tary School students have
worked together to build
three more raised beds to
expand the Elementary
AG program’s ‘farming and
pollinating garden.’
The program received a
grant, sponsored by Two
Rivers Resource Conser
vation and Development
Council, which included
three cedar raised bed
kits, pallets of soil and
mulch, a wheelbarrow and
drip irrigation hose exten
sion.
“Two of my carpenters,
Annie Laura Brock and
Carter Esary, put the beds
together and we placed
them outside to extend
our raised bed area,” said
PCES science lab teacher
Mandi Wood. “Third and
fourth graders unloaded
and filled the beds and
a couple of third grade
classes planted okra as a
part of October’s ‘Livin’ La
Vida Okra’ sponsored by
the Georgia Organics Farm
to School program. We
even had okra tattoos!”
Dave Marler visited the
school recently to check
on the site and to deliver
spring pollinating bulbs.
“Mrs. Zuke’s third
grade class showed him
the baby okras and asked
him 1,000 questions about
farming and soil,” said
Wood. “Fun was had by
all!”
The PCES Farmers Mar
ket will open in March and
spring flowers and veggies
that the students’ helped
grow will be available for
purchase.
