Nothing has been heard from Special

Greens and Col. Gaynor, who are en
camped In Canada, and, aa It haa lien
many days since bis departure, the
suggestion bat been made that be has
been kidnapped by them. When he
was last here he was careful not to,
* give an Intimation of bis plans for the
Rupture of the noted defendants, and
V! Is reasonable to suppose that It Is
his pnrpose to take them, qnawaret.
It may he that be has a deep and dark
plan for.'their capture, and the country

Payne to Succeed Hanna.
New York, May A—A special from
Washington says; The recent break-
fast conference at Senator Hanna’s
house, at which the President,
Poetmaster General Payne and Senator
Hanna were present, continues to bo
discussed by politicians of both par
ties. The general opinion among lead.
Ing Republicans Is that Henry C
Payne succeed Senator Hanna as
cbaliman of the Republican National
committee. Payne ia undoubtedly the
working politician of the Roosevelt
combination. He la shrewd, active and
not averao to taking big chances In the
political game. Ho la one of the few
of the old guards that made the Re
publican National oommlttea ao famous
dozen years %gu who haa survived
the whlrlegig of time and is still doing
business at tha old stand. Fessenden
practically out of politics; Good loo Is
dead; 8enatora Platt and Quay are die.
Inclined, on account of physical condi
tion, to tike tba active part in politics
they once did; Dudley is practically
practicing hare, and Clarkson has barn
out of politics for sometime. /Payne,
however ie today as deep in the game
ever.

[Communicated].
There are a great maoy people in the
world that are foolish enough, or, in
plainer words, have no belter sense than
to think because they arc treated with
some considentUon that they are very
important; tbit the world just couldn’t
get along without them. Yon find Ibis
class of peuple whetevet yon go, and It
always diigusts a sensible person to meet
up with them. It bsa been my lot to
meet with a few that had formed thla
exalted opinion of themselves. 1 have
met young men who, after they bad lef
their Country home, and spent a few
months in the city or in some country
town and bad 1 accumulated enough
money to “dike up” t litt le, would ge
above their rtlalng and their country
kin, and think they tie just better than
any thing that ever came along, and woe
to the lady that shows one of these n
little courtesy, or endeavors to make
heraelf pleasant to him. Yon will bear
of hla making such remarks as these to
his chums or "partners,” as be calls
them- “I tell you wbst, sht’a dead stuck
on me,” "she's anxious to get married,"
"sbe’e trying her best to catch me”—
when the lady in question has never h id
such a thought, but merely meant to
treat him as she would any gentleman.
And these same "cnckery fellows” will
soon begin to think they are better than
any of the town people, smarter and
have more sense. Soon they will begin
to express tbelr opinion of everybody in
general, run down the newspapers and
so on. “AM well, what fooli these
mortals be,” anyway.
“Ah, Bud,” at Sam Jouea says, you
had better sweep a little around your
doors, and get a little wiser yourself be
fore you begin to judge others too
harshly. This world moved on just as
smoothly before yotr came, and could
still get along very well without you,
end the sooner you realize this, how
much better it will be for you, end let
me gire you; n little ftiendly advice:
Don’t be so eilly ea to think that every
girl tbit treats you nicely and perhepe
jokee n little with you ia in love with
yon, end you will have more frieods.
